TEAS Exam

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi everybody,

I am getting ready to do the TEAS exam sometimes this month. I thought I would do it next week but found out that it contains Science questions too and now I am not sure I am ready for the exam yet. I have not done any Science and all these is Greek to me. I can do the Math, English but I am wondering how I can do something that I have no idea about. I have not even done any pre-requisites yet and my school requires I do the TEAS first. Anybody here who did the TEAS and had never done any Physics, Chemistry, Biology etc.? How do they expect us to know these things? I would appreciate any advice from anyone about how to go about doing the Science and also information about where you are getting the study guides for TEAS.

The study guide can be helpful. if you can"t get the TEAS study guide, get the NLN study guide. it has a brief overview of the sciences. Good luck.

The study guide is very helpful. It even shows you how to work through problems. You can order the study guide here:

http://www.atitesting.com/global/students/teas-study-manual.aspx

By working the problems in the study guide, you will have a better idea just how ready you are for the real test.

Hope this helps!

Good Luck!!!

Miranda

Are you saying your school requires that you take the TEAS before you can take any of the pre-reqs? I would double check with your school for clarification. It is my understanding that you can only take the TEAS 3 times in a lifetime so why would you take it before you were ready. You shouldn't have to take the TEAS until you are getting ready to apply to your schools nursing program or get on their waiting list. Does your school allow you to be on a waiting list and complete pre-reqs at the same time? If so, thats makes a little bit of sense.

My school recommends that people take the nursing entrance exam "as soon as possible" but it isn't technically required until somebody is ready to apply to the program, we do not have a waiting list.

Your school may sell their own version of the TEAS study guide, ours does.

Good luck. I can't imagine having to take a test I was not prepared to take. The TEAS is all the buzz around campus at our school and so far I have not met one person who has passed it...which is good news for me because none of them can apply to our program! I know that's not very helpful, but it is realistic.

If you don't mind me asking, what does your school consider a passing grade? At my 2-year school, a passing grade is 70 (and the test can be taken only twice here).

hi everybody!!!

i just moved here in va and trying to get into a nursing school for the pn program. haven't done any pre-reqs yet and my "stored knowledge" is really stored if you know what i mean ;) i attended college years agoooo...so yeah i have forgotten everything. i came from az and passed net and tabe there. i guess i did well after doing some reviews..so now, do you guys think i will have a hard time passing the teas? i am really worried and frustrated coz i have to take another type of entrance exam (which i don't really understand why it has to be different for each school or state!) i'm trying to look for science review stuff since that's the only thing different with teas from what i've heard...you think that would be enough? i don't wanna buy another reviewer! i need to take the test soon..school starts in june. please help...thanks!

Check with your school for clarification on when to take the TEAS and what a passing score is. Every school is different. Mine has you take the TEAS only during the application period and you can take it twice during that time. As far as I know you can keep taking it everytime you apply, there is not lifetime maximum that is clearly stated. A passing grade is a 50% or above in each section, BUT in order to have a competitive score, you would need at least an 89% composite.

I used the ATI study guide and the Kaplan studyguide and both did a good job preparing me for the exam. The Kaplan studyguide had a lot more information for the science section though...

hi! thanks again for replying! so you think it's better for me to just buy the kaplan study guide then? i was thinkin about buyin the ati one because it has the science portion coz everything else is the same with the net and tabe reviewers when it comes to english and math.

I used an online study tool...

www.testprepreview.com-teas_practice.htm

if that didn't work, just do testprepreview.com and look for the TEAS exam.

Good luck to you!!

Hi everybody,

I wish to thank all of you for the useful replies I got from you. My situation is that I am applying for the Nursing Program and the TEAS exam is one of the requirements among many like Placement Test, drug tests, immunization etc. I am okay with English and Math but my mind is completely blank with the Science. Science is completely new to me as I never did it in school. Anybody who has done TEAS here and had never done Science in school before? I will find out whether our school has a study guide before I make an appointment with them for a date in which to do the exam and if not, I will get the online one. I will find out from them too what the passing grade is. Thank you guys for your helpful responses. I really appreciate all the information I get from this website.

I just checked the ATI study guide and practice text and together they cost $58. That is very expensive. I remember at one time someone here posted a website which sells and also buys from people, old nursing books but I don't remember which one it was. Anybody knows it. I had checked it out at that time and the books there were really cheap and they even had the Kaplan copy too.

This is my experience with the TEAS exam and hopefully this might do you a little good:

I took it at my 2-yr college in Dec 08. It was the computer version, 170 questions, with instant results. This was my first and only time taking it. The science portion was where I had my lowest scores, 30 items with an 83.3% adjusted individual score. The national avg. score (as shown on my printout) was 66.4% and for the program I'm applying to it is 57.4% The specific areas of testing are

1) Scientific Reasoning,

2) General Science,

3) Life Science,

4) Chemical Science,

5) Physical Science, and

6) Human Body Science.

My score (83.3%) put me at the 92 percentile rank nationally and 98 for my program. It looks like there are roughly 5 questions for each of these areas and I missed one in each area except for life science, where I got them all. Again, this was at my school and I don't know if it is the same procedure, test, or types of questions everywhere.

Now here's my opinion: The Science portion is the second hardest section after Math, based on the national scores: Math - 64.8%, Science - 66.4%, English - 77.9%, Reading - 87.0%. If I were advising someone who was prepping for these tests, I would tell them to get to (and join) a library that has The Teaching Company's DVDs available to check out. (They aren't cheap to buy so that's why I say to find a library that has them but your wallet might be in better shape than mine. ;)) I used/am using their DVDs to supplement my A&P 1&2 lectures and lab classes. Dr. Goodman's lectures (32 in the series, each 45 minutes long) are as good as my in-class lectures. I stumbled across TTC when I had to take a placement test to try to skip Intro-Bio so I could get into A&P 1 and not lose a year taking the pre-reqs. I used their Biology series to cram over a 4-day period and passed my 40 question placement test with 6 more questions than needed. This is better than it sounds because the last time I passed a biology class was in high school 32 years ago and the only other contact I had with the subject was when I took the time to fail an intro college course 27 years ago.

I'm sure that there are other very good resources available to you to prep, I am suggestion the videos because I found it easier than trying to read multiple books and I'm specifically mentioning the ones above because I've had direct experience with them. As with everything in this world, your mileage may vary and this is just my :twocents:. Good luck.
