TABE Test

i have to take the tabe test as an entrance test for a nursing program i am planning on applying to. has anyone taken it & does anyone have any advice? i thought i was really good at math - ive always been good at it, but they have the most random questions- like "if it takes mary 6 hours to mow a lawn & jose 4 hours to mow a lawn, how long will it take for both of them to mow it?" .. call me crazy, but the answer was something like 2 hours.. how do you get that??

they said theres like a 30-40% passing rate for their entrance test which reeeeally freaks me out since im taking it next thursday!

i remember doing those problems in algebra but couldn't tell you how to do it now without looking it up, but i saved all my math books so could if i needed too. does your exam have a study guide? do a google search you will probably find lots to go by. i took the teas and it had really random math from courses i never even took, i studied their guide back to front inside and out and did very well on the exam.

I took the TEAS and it had really random math from courses I never even took, I studied their guide back to front inside and out and did very well on the exam.

I don't know anything about the test but I do know how to solve a math problem like that. I just had it in Algebra and just finished the class 2 days ago.

Here the solution:

You have to set it up like a fraction and it's easy to figure out.

Let "t" stand for time so it's:

t/4 + t/6 (fraction form)

Now, find the LCD which would be 12. So now the problem will look like 12(t/4) + 12(t/6) = 12 x 1.

Reduce and you'll have:

3t + 2t = 12

Add to get, 5t = 12

Solve the equation: Divide 5t into 12 to get rid of the t and the final answer will be 2 and 2/5 hours.

Here's another one to help clarify:

A bathtub can be filled by only the cold water faucet in 10 minutes and by only the hot water faucet in 12 minutes. How long does it take to fill the tub if both faucets are open?

Set the problem up: Keep in mind that when setting up the problem, the fastest running, draining, filling, etc...will always go first.

t/10 + t/12

Find LCD: 60

so 60(t/10) + 60(t/12) = 1 x 60

Reduce to get: 6t + 5t = 60

Add and solve equation: 11t = 60

t = 60/11, now reduce

Solution t = 5 and 5/11 mins.

Here's a different one that involves subtraction and you'll know when to subtract by the way the problem reads. If it has one drain emptied while another filled, how long did it take, you'll know to subtract.

For example:

A water faucet can fill a sink in 6 minutes whereas the drain can empty it in 4 minutes. If the sink is full, how long will it take to empty if both the faucet and drain are open?

Set up problem:

Multiply 12 to all sides.

12(t/4) - 12(t/6) = 12 x 1

Solution: t = 12 minutes.

That's good. If you put labels and factor label your answer, it makes more sense rather than memorizing seperate type questions. That's the only thing I learned from Chemistry I (and nothing from Chem II even though I got an 'A') , but it helps in all word problems.
