Study groups

Published

I'm in the 5th term of my program and, despite my best efforts, I have just not been able to join a study group at this school. I want to be part of one, I find them very helpful, and have always had one before. But the class dynamics at this school are odd, most of our coursework is online, and no one really helps each other. There are some study groups I know of, but I've never been invited into one of them. I'm a good student, organized, helpful, and I'm smart, but certainly not a know-it-all like some others. Is it possible to get through nursing school withOUT ever being in a study group? Personally, I feel kind of alone in this struggle...with not much support from my peers. Not where I like to be.

Of course it's possible. And if you make it a little while longer, you will be living evidence! If you want to join a study group, I'd say go for it. Ask the study groups you know of if they would let you contribute in any way. If their doors are closed, consider starting one of your own. For online classes, you are usually able to communicate via a message board. Use this to your advantage when setting up a study group.

Have you tried organizing your own? The wait time's much shorter than sitting around and hoping someone will invite you into one.

its not quite that simple, but yes, I have organized several groups in the past. the problem with that is that the weaker students always want to join your group so you end up dragging them along and not getting much out of it yourself. As an update to my last post, I sent a shoutout to my peers saying I needed help and got invited into 4 groups over the weekend which was better than one by far, we got 4 times as much accomplished and now I am going into the test tomorrow feeling prepared and ready. I'm not usually one to ask for help, but in this case it was well worth it.

I've just realized that I am an individual studier*. I went this whole semester thinking that if I studied with other students it would give me a broader picture on the class, but I was wayyyy wrong. It seemed to me that the majority of the people in the group were very confused, or know-it-all's. I would end up leaving our study sessions without really getting anything and having to study myself in the long run anyway. If your doing fine so far, chances are you don't really need to participate in a group. It's all overrated if you ask me ;)

depends on the group, but yes, sometimes this is true. i think the key is to keep groups small, no more than 4 people, split the work and provide notes for each other, and to study with people you respect and think are as smart or smarter than you. thats the problem with just starting groups willy-nilly...if it isn't the right fit for you, it ends up being a waste of time. its important to find the right people who study the same way you do or who you can compliment. everyone brings a different take to the table, and often I learn a ton from my study mates.:specs:

In our class its very much like you descrribe, mostly online and then everyone has busy lives, work, kids and of course school. What we did is we created our own website with areas to post questions, share information, med cards. Additionally several of us have study group on the internet using Skype. This works out great beacuse everyone is in their own home with all their books and materials in front of them.

This has proven very productive for all of us since we all live in different towns.

Good luck.
