Study group?

well fishngolf, everybody's different. Since at 36, you are already a *grown up,* one would think you could trust your own opinion. I'm in my third semester (3/5 BSN) and have never truly utilized a study group. Invariably, if I run into one before the test, they ask me to join but I'm the one who asks all the questions and helps them "connect the dots." (I have previous healthcare experience). So personally they are not helpful to me. I spend a lot of time rewriting my notes from the class into a semblance of order that makes sense to me, leaving out the concepts I already know and brushing up on the ones that I'm a little foggy on.

You can do a combination, study on your own and with a group like I do. I am usually the one teaching the information.

It almost sounds like I wrote the above post. I was told to study in a group but I like to study by reading, reading, and more reading. Somtimes I will teach my wife what I am studying just so I can vocalise.

same here, study groups are only good for me in that I can teach others and that helps to solidify things for me.

I have also found that female nursing students are incredibly chatty and often spend most of the time talking about their nails and such.

One the first day of school, other more advanced students came in and extolled the virtues of study groups - "you can't do it alone", etc, etc.

That is a load of crap. If your style is to work alone - work alone. I am doing very well and I have yet to join a study group. Yes, I will occassionally ask a fellow student a question, but that is about all there is to it. Some people enjoy working in groups - groups slow me down. I also did my pre-reqs online so I am used to solving my own problems, answering my own questions, etc. Do what works for you and ignore everyone else...

:thankya: Thanks guys for the input. I gave the study group thing another try this past week and decided to let it go. Seems like we had similiar experiences.... others being to chatty... being the one teaching...etc.

Not to sound sexist, but what gender are your instructors /Chairperson? Maybe it's a "Mars v.s. Venus" sort of thing. I, too, find groups to be much more of a distraction then a benifit. People discussing their love life or some T.V. show. There's always that one person who doesn't come prepared and has a 1000 questions on the stuff you are all set with and it makes it difficult to get your questions out.

What seems to work for me is I try to keep up with the readings, attend every class and review lecture notes, usually starting 7-10 days before a test. If there's a certain point that I still don't get, I'll Google it, look it up in other books, or ask the professor. In general, I like to read/study things from multiple sources to see something from many points of view.

Just my 2 cents.

study groups are a waste of time for me. like you guys, i learn better on my own. this is definitely a gender thing. girls tend to meet in groups for just about everything, esp. for dealing with anything difficult. can't site any studies myself but i've had psych profs mention studies on such issues especially with regards to the work place.

It depends on the size and the people you study with. I study with 2 others who also know their stuff and we get alot done.
