Student Loans

So how long does it take to start paying your student loans after you graduate? I went to an accelerated program and my repayment for Federal Stafford loans says it does not need to be paid until 2009. Does it just hang out until then or do they figure out I graduated and start sending the bill? I did exit counseling a month ago.

Also, should I consolidate now? I think I will lose out on the deferment if I do it before July 1st...

I am so confused. I have never had student loans before. Anyone have any advice...please reply!

Thanks!

You need to check with your lender or the finacial aid office at the school you graduated from.

My understanding of Stafford loans is that there is only a 6 month deferral period after graduation then payments start.

Yes, I'd check with your lender.

For some reason they had my graduation date as 2007 when I actually graduated this last April... I don't know if they would have figured it out or not... but I want to get my loans paid off so I fixed it. I think I had about 6 months of deferment after I graduated but I consolidated so now I think it will start sooner. That's just my deal, but I'd definitely call and find out the scoop for your own case. Make a list with all your questions - it is confusing!

I believe every semester the schools send enrollment information for students who have or have had federal loans. They will notify them that you have graduated then you have a 6 month period before you have to start paying. I am not sure about the consolidation thing since I consolidated before I graduated so I was able to keep my 6 month grace period.
