Hi!
I am a nursing student and I have to do a project, which is called a Capstone. My question is this: As L&D nurses, is there something you think should change or could be changed with regards to nursing procedures or patient care? I have to do a huge research segment on this, but I am having a hard time coming up with a topic.
Thank you kindly for any help you may provide.

Almost a Nurse,
First of all, welcome to allnurses.com. It's really a wonderful and informative site.
If you don't get the answers you need in this particular forum, you may want to head over to one of the student forums called "Student Nurse Assistance." In this forum, student nurses can ask nurses questions for such as research projects or reports. You may want to check there if you don't get what you need here.
Once again, WELCOME!

Here's an idea: Group Beta Strep is a bacteria that some women have colonized in the birth canal. If mom has a lady partsl delivery, they receive treatment with IV antibiotics because if the baby picks up this bug during delivery, it can get very, very sick. If the mom does not receive full treatment before she delivers, then blood cultures are drawn on the baby to make sure it did not pick up the bug. Scheduled Cesarean Section moms are not treated for Group Beta Strep with antibiotics because the baby will not pass through the birth canal, and the bag of waters, which acts as a protective buffer for the baby is not broken; plus, insurance companies will not pay for moms to be admitted 8 hours in advance of their surgery to receive IV antibiotics. There is great debate over whether oral antibiotics have a strong enough effect. HOWEVER, even though these babies' chances of picking up this bug are very, very slim with a scheduled Cesarean Section, they are all stuck and tested for it in the nursery because mom did not get treatment. Poor babies! Just something that my facility does that is regulated by the CDC and maybe NIH, too. . .

Excellent topic! I was always told that even mother's who have c-sections should be treated, but I however was not. I had c-sections and was positive. All my babies were just fine. It will be interesting to research this!

I think there could be a lot of research done on the treatment of preterm labor, as it seems it is both over and under treated.

Can you research something that is a current topic? Lots of evidence-based info on nurses with long fingernails/acrylic nails that have carried microbes and have led to neonate infection and death.
All of you are so great! I have so many ideas now! I just have to look at different topics that I can locate 20 articles and 5 research articles on. Thank you! I really appreciate it!
