State driving licence

When it is stated that a US state requires that you apply for their state driving licence within 30 days, would they actually check on how many days you have been resident in the state? Sounds like a funny question but it would alter things for my son who will be 18 six weeks after our arrival.

each state has its own requirements on what is required for permanent residence..

Thanks, I'm off to Connecticut end of september. It is required as a new resident for you to apply for state licence within 30 days. My son will be 18 2 weeks after those 30 days. I just wondered how strict they were on counting the actual days you had been resident. If my son applies for a license whilst he is still 17 it makes things a lot more complicated for him as they have certain regulations for 16/17 yr olds. Will they know how many days we will have been resident there??

if you are looking at 2 weeks I would wait until then and then get him to take his test

we were on the island for months before we took our tests. with a british licence in hand you can get away with it for a short time so long as you dont get stopped for anything major.

its advisable to adhere to the state laws just in case anything happens on the roads.

as for your 17 year old he can sit his test whenever he wants, same as back home.

personally i would cover yourself legally and not risk not having a licence as you never know when you may have an accident, your fault or not.

think of it like this

would you drive on the roads here without proper cover?

if he isnt driving of course its not an issue, he could just take his test when he turns 18

Thanks everyone! Hubby and I intend to get our state licence ASAP, but seen as though our son hasn't passed his test here yet, like you say he can apply to take it there once he's 18 and had a few lessons out there.
