Starting ADN Program in the Fall (August 2019)

Hey guys, just wanted to announce that I got accepted into the ADN program from the school I wanted. I'm now in the process of getting all of my credentials in order (Vaccines Records, Health Insurance, etc). On my credentials form it stated that I needed a physical and mental health check, can I get physical check from my primary Doc? Would I also need to see my Therapist for the mental check? Also, how much can I expect to pay for books while in school and would I be better of buying my books new rather than used? Finally, is the newest flu vaccine already out? Thanks guys!

Congrats!

Your primary doc can clear you. Ignore the mental check. Seriously. Don't state you have mental health issues. If your primary doc knows about any mental health concerna he/she can consider that when you get cleared.

Some of my fellow students rent books, but I haven't because I want to have them to review for the NCLEX. I have found that getting the text books off Amazon is cheaper than the campus bookstore. Even then, getting them used off Amazon, my books have run about four to five hundred bucks a semester. Ouch.

Flu vaccines usually come out around October.

For books wait and see what your class requires -- some teachers require online access codes that don't come with used or rented textbooks.

Once you know what books you need, shop around. Some textbook publishers like F.A. Davis have discount codes occasionally that you can use on an online purchase. My first nursing semester the "package" at the college bookstore was ~$700 and I spent closer to $400 by buying my books individually.

Amazon and publisher websites are your friend. Take advantage of Prime Student if you can, you get all the benefits of Amazon Prime including 2 day shipping for half the cost of a regular Prime membership.

If you don't think you'll use your books after school (there's tons of resources through the place you are working usually), Amazon rentals is a great deal for books. I usually get ebooks, but the ones I don't really think I'll ever use again I just rent from amazon.

I like ebooks too. Usually they're less expensive.
