Stark State ADN Program

I will be starting my prereq's at Stark State in January when I get back from Iraq. So, if you are familiar with Stark State's program in Canton/Akron, let me know your opinions. I have mostly good about it, but nothing to detailed or whatever about it.

heya Normus! I just got out of the Navy myself a couple of months ago and will be moving to the Akron/Canton area. I will be starting the long trek towards a nursing career in the summer/fall time frame of 06. I don't know anything particular about that school or its program....its just one of the schools on my list to check out. Akron University and Kent State are both right in that area too, though I think they are both BSN programs. Goodluck with your pursuits when you return! By the way, what branch are you serving in and is your time up? or are you just rotating back for a while?

By the way, have you lived in that area before? I originally grew up in Mansfield, traveled, and I am now returning from Wisconsin/Illinois area.....so I had to do a lot of research on the Akron area to see where the decent spots to live are. If you need an opinion on that, I can help ya out there. Seeya'round.

How are you doin'? I am finally getting out of the military for good! I was in the Marines until 2002 after 12 years. I then joined the Guard and have been to Iraq twice with them! I think I deployed more in 3 years of the Nat. Guard than 12 years in the Marines. I also grew up just south of Canton.

As far as ADN programs, I am pretty sure that Stark State is the only one in the Akron/Canton area. BUT, I do believe that the Kent branch in New Philly has an ADN program. I have chosen Stark State because it is very close to where I work and where I will live when I get back. Definitely a convenience choice for me. The drive to New Philly would kill me having to do it everyday and still work the screwed up hours I do. Take it easy Navy guy!

I am a second year nursing student at Kent State in New Philly, OH - I believe all the branches offer the ADN program and then you can go on for your BSN...but you might want to double check that if Kent is one of your options to look into. It is an amazing program - it's kind of known as the more difficult nursing school in our area but I feel like it's completely worth it -you learn so much and I feel pretty confident during my clinicals thanks to all the information we get. We also have a new "nursing" building that is very up to date - a lot of the newest equipment and all that - just something for you guys to think about - if you need/want any other info on it - just let me know!! Kent State does have a Stark campus, right next to Stark State. Kent-Stark offers the first, second and fourth year of the BSN curriculum, but doesn't do the ADN. Aultman Hospital has a, currently diploma, soon-to- be ADN, program.

I think most of the programs in are area are fairly similar in quality, and have not heard specific complaints about any of them, in particular. I am partial to Akron, however (which has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that I will be graduating Akron in May, of course ;)).

When I was deciding on a program, I had looked into Stark State. Unfortunately, they had a waiting list at the time, which meant I had to wait two years to start. I have completed the BSN at Akron in the same amount of time it would have taken me to get through Stark's program, since I did not have to wait for a spot at Akron. That's something you may want to take into consideration, depending on what the current wait times are for the ADN programs.

I can give you a little bit of info....I met with a counselor a few months ago regarding the weekend program. There's no wait list for the program (at least at that time there wasn't), and the clinicals run every other weekend for a year at Mercy Medical in Canton. If you go onto Stark State's site and pull up the program information for the Nursing degree, there is a PDF file for weekend students. Included in there is a clinical schedule - at least you can get an idea of the hours and such.

I am on 24/48's at my firestation and I wonder how feasible it would be.

Have anyone looked into the new program at Aultman Hospital. Its ADN that was started last fall August 05?

:lol_hitti :lol_hitti I am currently enrolled in Stark State's ADN program. The clinical hours does not include class and lab hours. Those unfortunately are separate. The weekend program has class twice a week from 6-9:30pm and then the clinicals are 12 hours saturday and sunday but only every other weekend. Stark State is one of the cheapest colleges around this area and there is a waiting list for almost every other nursing school around. Stark State has a smaller campus and I really like it there.:sofahider

heya BlizzardJane,

I am taking some nursing pre-req's at Stark this fall (I am a direct admit to the UAkron program already), I kind of assumed all the ADN programs in this area had a wait list and never thought to ask stark if they do or not. So, do you by any chance know if there is currently a wait list there? I am going to get my BSN....but if I could pick up an ADN along the way and start working, well, all the better ;).

i can't say enough good things about stark state. it is a small campus with wonderful instructors that want you to succed. their nursing instructors are the best!! it is so worth checking into.
