SQ injection

Published

Hi I am a senior nursing student and I had a question about subcutaneous injection.

So I was giving heparin 5000 units (1cc) SQ in left arm of client.

I thought I pushed the medication all the way but somehow not all was given before I already removed the needle.

Thus I had to change the needle and finish the dose by giving another SQ injection in another site, which is in the ABD.

Is this considered a highly unsafe situation? Would the client be affected by this other than the fact that she had to receive 2 instead of single injection?

Please answer and thank you.

No. Nothing will happen.

Just remember not to rush. For a cooperative adult, what will hurt the most is the needle being inserted. Once it's in, take your time and make sure that you've given the entire dose before removing the needle.

I would ask your instructor about this situation. What do you think? Do you think this is an "unsafe" situation. We are happy to help but ask ALL students to post what their research has revealed to them first.
