specialty change??

So I'm currently an ER nurse. I like it but I don't love it like I thought I would. I've been in the position for 7 months. Ever since I went to nursing school I've wanted to be a NICU RN. Well my ER is changing our shifts around to a block schedule which is going to be difficult with my family the way my block is. I am also on nights which is wrecking havoc on my body IE causing blood sugar drops and dizzy spells. My hospital has a bunch of NICU openings right now, including day shift, as we are opening a new NICU in a few months. I'm seriously considering applying for it and taking the chance on my dream. I just wanted to see if others thought it was a good idea. Like I said I've been in the ER for 7 months and although I like it I just keep feeling like I should go for NICU. Thanks :)

I tried a bunch of different kinds of nursing, and don't regret any of them :) That's a great thing about nursing- if something doesn't pan out the way you hoped, or you get fried in one area, there are other things to choose from. IF the NICU openings don't come up much, maybe see if you can interview, and shadow- can't hurt :)

I know what you mean. I just switched from med/surg ortho to MICU. Now that I have made the switch, I am soooo happy I did it. Kind of wished I had done it sooner. Listen, you can always go back to the ER, but grab the opportunity and seize it. I used to work nights too and I'm telling you that my health has also suffered. For a while I was worried about what my co-workers would think, but you have to worry about yourself and what makes you happy. I say go for it!

I say, go for it too!

once you know your heart is at other place rather than where you are now, the work won't be fun.

Good luck!
