how soon to transfer within VA

I am going to sound like a wuss and most likely am but...I transferred to a job in Wy and let me tell you something..IT IS COLD! I have only been hear a month and -12 is making me sick as a dog and exhausted. I have been offered a job in Wilmington NC but I am not sure how long I should stay here in WY before I can transfer? 3 most? 6 mos? I know HR did a lot to get me here and I don't want to get a bad reputation. Any advice?

Review the employee handbook it should have the minimum time you have to be on station before you can transfer again.

I don't mean this to sound like I'm picking at you, but you've been at your new position for only ONE month.....and you're seeking to transfer? After you said HR went through some contortions to get you where you are now? Seems like a lot to ask.....and I'd expect it to to go over like a lead balloon.

Besides that, I'm going to guess you didn't do any research at all into Wyoming, since you are shocked that it's cold in winter.....and I'm wondering how you didn't know this? And I'm also wondering if you've looked at the area you are now considering moving to, or are you going to be equally surprised at something like how hot it is in the summer?

Again, I'm not trying to pick, but if I was HR, I'd have some serious doubts about your candidacy. There's no reason they'd expect you to stay anywhere! :(

My advice? Suck it up and stick it out until it gets warmer. Unless you have some debilitating cold weather condition like Raynauds, there is no reason you cannot adapt successfully. Dress warmly in layers and limit your time outside. Do you not have sufficient heat in your home? Warm clothing? Gloves, boots, etc.? Hang in there! I will bet the spring/summer is nice. :)

-12 does not make one sick. You did not say how you were offered a job in NC when you had just started in WY but if it is the VA, I doubt any transfers would be approved at this point. Employee hiring and transfer costs are significant and are expected to be recouped unless someone quits. Part of the reference checks, etc, are to see what kind of employee you are. I

I would recommend sucking it up and dressing in layers. I wear long underwear, warm boots, a warm hat and layers to work. I take them off at work and dress normally, then redress warmly to go home.

Last I knew there was no so called transfers in the VA system and you had to apply like every other candidate for the position. If you review most VA job postings relocation expenses are not covered.

Actually, I think jeckrn is right. I think you do have to apply like anyone else but VA experience, good references and proficiencies can make your application stand out.

Your response allowed me to think about what I might be portraying myself as to the HR/current dept I am in. Thank you for the truthful comment.

No there are not transfers and I did interview for the position in NC and received a tentative offer recently. After talking with yall I should stay put, increase my experience and proficiency to maintain my good name as a nurse. I had a weak moment but back on track...

I wonder if they knew you had already started in WY if their offer would still be extended. Just curious about this.

I believe it would and I hope this satisfies your curiosity

I am not sure what part of WY you are in but I too am from WY and work within the VA system. Give WY a chance, yes the winters are very cold but the summers are beautiful. Where are you coming from? Remember you did just move to a new location so this could be the cause of your sickness. If it was me I would wait before transferring.
