I'm so upset right now mostly because I can't decide what to do. My husband is in the military and we had to move because of it but it has really set me back. When I was in florida attending hcc I only had about 2-3 prereqs left which I would of had done to apply for the nursing program next fall. Not that we moved to north carolina the only school thats by me that offer adn is ftcc and they really suck. First off attending that school I have to complete 4 prereqs and they make you pay to get a cna lis. that you won't even use it's crazy. The only other school is a hour a way and I don't think I can handle a total of 2hrs of commute. I can't decide if I just want to switch my major to either pharmacy or respitory or maybe even surg tech. If I stay with nursing it will take me a extra year to enroll because they only accept in the fall and thats even if I get accepted. I'm just so dissapointed....

I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this. I can't imagine what it must be like to be a military wife (well only from watching Army Wives, but still). I have a lot of respect for someone in your situation.
I think you have to weigh what you really want in terms of the pros and cons of getting there. If you did another program, would you feel you were settling?
I can speak from experience about making such a long commute every day. It isn't fun. I've been driving an hour each way five days a week for a year now and will be doing it all over again in the fall and spring. It takes a lot of time away from studying and time with family and friends. It is doable, but it's really hard, especially if you have kids.
Good luck with this decision.

I know I most likly won't be completly happy with the switch. I have worked so hard on my nursing prereqs. I have always wanted to work in the hospital as a nurse since I was younger unlike most people I was happy to visit the hospital just to see the nurses and doctors work it's a passion that I have had for a long time. I think I'm going to have to just suck it up and drive a hour. I just have to figure out how I'm going to do it with a 3 year old because I know most nursing programs are all day M-F. Thanks for your input

I want you to keep your head up and not give up because you have to move. Sometimes you have to make sacrifices for things you want in life. You might have to commute 2 hours to school everyday, but it would be worth it at the end, when you graduate and get your license. Becoming a CNA is not stupid because you have the potential to open doors later down the road.
Don't give up on your dream of becoming a nurse because you might have to commute 2 hours everyday.

I'm not really sure why they "suck" but my program makes us become an STNA before we can get on the waitlist. I won't be working as an STNA, and don't like spending the tuition on it, but the program is great, so I figure it's worth it.
Plus, you'll spend more in gas on a 2 hour commute than you will on the CNA tuition.

I'm a veteran, and I know moving around and having to start over is not easy. But instead of looking at it as a completely negative thing, look at the positive side. At least you have the option of two schools. Neither might be ideal, but they can still get you to the point of accomplishing your goal.
Write down the pros and cons of each. Would you consider working as a CNA while in school, even on an as needed basis? At least you can gain some experience and learn the ropes of a healthcare environment. And if you choose the 2 hour roundtrip commute, it really won't be so bad. I have to travel about the same for the program I'm in. I use the time to think, to listen to good music, and even listen to a tape of myself reviewing, on mornings that I have an exam. As long as you have your mind set on the drive, you get used to it.
And if for some reason you don't get into either program right away, don't give up on your dream! Maybe you can use that time to take classes for your BSN, while working as a CNA. There's always something you can do. Like the saying goes, "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade." It will work out. Just don't give up!

What about on-line courses to finnish you pre-req's. Thats what I am going to do. Then I will be moving from my hubby and bringing my to kids to live at my parents house while im in school for my BScN. It will be alright as my man works 8 days on and 5 off so he will be able to make the drive to come and see us!
If its a nurse you want to be fight for it!!

When you say FTCC do you mean forsyth tech in winston salem? Where r u located at in NC? There are several schools in the area that have a nursing program. I just got accepted into their program for the fall. Also they accept new students in the fall and spring. The CNA is ridiculous but all colleges require you to have CNA certification here in NC.

That stinks I am a former military spouse and had to put my schooling on hold many times because of it. I hope you can find what you are looking for. I know it means another year, or a long commute, but it's worth it in the end!

If A & P are your prereq's, you could take them online at Amarillo College...What about doing any other prereq's online?? I'm so sorry you've been set back, but maybe some creative thinking/planning will help?
