Shadowing

Don't pass out:D Just kidding! Seriously though, don't be afraid to ask questions but also try and get a feel for what's going on. If things seem hectic or the patient needs extra attention, stay out of the way. Ask the nurse they out you with questions you were to afraid to ask the manager. The OR is a great place to work and can be very competitive. Good luck and keep us posted!

Honestly, whether you are a new grad or a seasoned nurse from the med-surg floor, the same holds true... Be yourself... The OR is less about what work experiences you have and more about your personality and how you react to stress. The OR is full of big personalities and some can be abrasive. I say this because you will be given the training to work in the OR if selected since you get little if any education in nursing school that is specific to the OR.

Thanks for all of the advice and the link. I should have mentioned that I have been to the OR on several occasions during nursing school, so I feel comfortable with staying out of the sterile field and not passing out LOL.

Besides asking questions when appropriate, what can I do to make myself stand out as an applicant? I want to make a good impression because I really want this job.

Also, should I wear my school scrubs or business casual (I know that I will have to change when I get there).

I would dress like you are going for an interview, because you essentially are. You may be there shadowing but it is still part of the interview process.

Thank you so much for your advice springchick. I was going to wear my school scrubs, but now I think I will go with button down shirt and slacks, with dark tennis shoes (cause no way I'm gonna wear heals in the OR LOL).
