Seroquel

Published

Hi, All. I'm new to psych; some of you have responded to my posts. Thank you. I have a question re: Seroquel. Many people on our unit are on it -- depressed, detox, geriatrics. I understand the med's uses are for schizophrenia and bipolar dep/mania? Are there off-label uses that explain why so many people are prescribed it? Thanks for educating me. I'm really enjoying the unit.

Sleep is a biggie. Im a student but have LOTS of personal experience with psych/psych meds. During one hospitalization almost everyone was on low doses for sleep.

It gets used a lot on our units for anxiety (like 25-50 mg doses). We usually give higher doses (100 mg+) for sleep.

in my institution where i work.it helps a patient to be calm and and get some rest and sleep.but the major action of seroquel is to calm a patient.sometimes we give it up to 600mg per day.

Antipsychotic for bipolar & schizophrenia.

It's not uncommon for us to give 100mg or so during the day, up to 800mg at HS.

Sometimes supplemented by other antipsychotics.

Large dose at night due to drowsiness/sedation, but never prescribed as a sleep agent on our unit.
