I was wondering what the rate of pay for school nurses are compared to hospital nurses. I am interested in school nursing, but I didn't know how the two compared. Any help would be appreciated.

My first year I made about 25,000 which was equal to my PT hours that I worked in the hospital. If you calculated the hours I was also working 200 more hours in the schools. If it is the health coordianator for a system you may make "a little" more; but, if it is a position under the coordinator the average price around here is about the starting wage (or less) as the hospital.

It depends on what state you are working in, if you're on the teachers' pay scale, and what education experience you have. I left a P/T hospital job working 10pm -7am, 5 shifts q2weeks. I was at the top of the scale with 15 yrs ER experience. When I went to the school, I took about an $18,000 pay cut and work about 20 "official" hours more per year, but I no longer work nights, weekends, holidays, or summers!!! I had to start at step 1 on the teachers' scale, so every year I get a raise. I got my Masters degree so I get compensated in pay for that where you probably wouldn't in the hospital. Eventually, I will catch up in money and in sleep that I lost working nights. I love the job, so the positives outweigh the negatives, hands down!

I am a school nurse in Texas and I make in one month what I could make in about 5 12 hour shifts at the hospital. Lets just say if you get into school nursing you are not in it for the money!

I was wondering what the rate of pay for school nurses are compared to hospital nurses. I am interested in school nursing, but I didn't know how the two compared. Any help would be appreciated.

THere was just an ad in yesterday's paper looking for NYC school nurses. Said that the pay was $29.40 / hr and the job is for 30-35 hours per week.

I am a school nurse in Illinois. My salary is comparable to office nurses in our area - $17.39/hour. Yes I could definitely make more in the hospital, but for my family, the "benefits" far outweigh the salary. Of course, this is an easy statement to make since I am not the primary breadwinner in my family. If I was a single mom, I don't know that I could afford this job.

I live in Nevada and starting pay for an elementary school nurse is under $30,000. But when I talked to a school nurse and figured out how many hours she actually works, it broke down to $31.29 an hour. At the hospital, it's $22.82 for new RN's. But of course, hospital nurses make more because they don't have those weeks off here and there throughout the year.

I live in a large rural county in GA. I only make about $20,000 and work 40 hrs a week. I really enjoy the job however, and love the schedule. As another school nurse said on here....if I was a single mom I don't know if I could afford this job!

I live in Mass, and was offered a position only working for the rest of the school year at a little over 32,000. I guess that is not too bad huh? :rolleyes:

LOL...$32,000 is what I made working in Atlanta as a recptionist before I decided to go back to school for nursing...I made more money BEFORE finishing college...and my X is a HS dropout and makes almost $40,000!!! I thought going to college meant more money, but apparently not :(

Oh well.. I DO love my job and have GREAT hours...and in my book that counts for alot. I just know if anything ever happened to my husband (which is quite possible as he is a cop) that I would never be able to make it on that salary :(
