I'm going to move this post to the Distance Learning forum. I've heard negative things about them. Hopefully someone will come along and help you in that forum, since this forum didn't avail any help. Good luck!

Ive been reading through alot of the excelsior vs RUE posts. Im kinda confused and Im sure everyone is tired of answering these questions, sooo Ill try to keep it short and sweet. I understand Rue, college network, etc. are just publishing companies, but It just seems like its more convenient. Like the fact that they have a monthly payment plan, does anyone know have any financing info on excelsior?? I couldnt find much on the actual website, besides loan info. Also, it seems more expensive. I think it said 300 per credit hour!!! Also, do you get study material with excelsior or do you have to order that seperate?? Im just so confused and really want to get this over with, any info will help. Thanks!!
Threads merged for continuity.
NursePeace- EC does have the pay-Your-Way program, which allows you to make installments. I'm not sure about the loans, because they weren't available when I was an EC student. You do get free course outlines for each course, which are available at the website. have you registered on EC's website yet? Once you do, you'll have access to all that stuff.
Don't worry- you'll get plenty of answers from current EC students here. The forum is just slow this weekend, for some reason. Good luck to you- most of us have done just fine without giving thousands of dollars to a publishing company. If anything, you can do a search on Ebay, and buy Rue or TCN study guides for much less than if you were to sign an expensive contract with them.

I think going through Rue, College Network and Chancellors is a complete wast of time and money. You can buy their guides off ebay for a fraction of the cost. You would ultimately be responsible for your own work, these companies are used to condense the material to make it easier to study for your exams. As far as the costs, it cost more to go through these companies as compared to going directly through EC.
Read through the threads, the info you would get is endless. I'm not sure how many exams you would need or what your prior background is but I would suggest you go ahead and contact EC by first applying. If you feel like you need one of the publishing companies then go ahead.
I personally have gone through Excelsior and am buying my guides through ebay. I was almost all signed up with Rue ( I had to send them my signature page, via fax). I found this site and contacted EC......long story short that last paged was never sent. I've had no regrets.

The 300 per credit hour is for actual online courses, not the credit-by-exam tests that you take for the Associates degree program. If you register for a free account on the EC website, go to the publications page; there you'll find a PDF called something like "How Much Will It Cost for My ADN?" or something like that. The majority of the nursing exams are $200-something ... $205, maybe? And I think they're 3 credits.
I know that it SEEMS convenient to use these publishing companies because they tell you that hey, we'll send you everything you need to pass, easy-peasy ... but I've also heard some students complain that the materials aren't quite enough, and there are things on the EC exams that weren't covered in the publications.
As has been mentioned, you can buy study materials from other students, or on eBay, for much less. That's what I did -- I used Chancellor's guides, in addition to other resources (textbooks, notes, etc.), that I purchased used on eBay, where I also re-sold them.
One important thing to remember -- the publishing companies can potentially add thousands to your overall tuition ... thousands. They are NOT affiliated with the school, and you'll be paying EC money anyway, on top of what you pay the publishing companies. I've heard something about people now financing their EC fees through The College Network (TCN), but you are STILL paying Excelsior either way!!! I shudder to think what the interest rate is on those "loans," too.
Also, some of these publishing companies will "evaluate" your transcripts and tell you which exams you'll need to take to obtain your degree from Excelsior. My advice -- submit your application to Excelsior ($75 application fee) and let Excelsior tell you which classes you'll need. The publishing companies have no business speaking on Excelsior's behalf, when Excelsior itself warns students against using third-party publishers:

I hope all that info is helpful! Best of luck, whatever you decide to do. :)

I know I was busy getting my behind kicked in the ER for the last three days ... LOL! It was apparently Wacky Electrolyte Weekend, with a Side Order of Rhabdo for good measure. Ha!
Thanks everyone for your replies. Usually Im pretty good about researching things on my own, but for some reason I just couldnt find all my answers. Feel a little bit like a bone head!! Oh well, thanks guys :)
Do not feel like a bonehead!! :) You aren't the first (or the last) to wonder about this stuff. We only know because we've heard it from someone else, usually!
