I have a big math class coming up next week and a rather large section of our test is telling military time and Roman numerals. I have no problem with the military time. But I need help with the Roman numerals. All I know in Roman numerals is 1-10.

I'm wondering if anyone has any tips to remembering the larger numbers. I figure that if I can remember the symbol for 10, 20, 30, and so on, I should be okay. Does anyone has a simple way to remembering these?

I am having the same test next Friday. I have always had problems with roman numerals. I had a list if the numbers that was given to me in the packet first day and I can't find in. Also another problem with me is the pid, bid, whatever they are all the abbrevations and I have no idea what most of them mean.

My silly little way.....I have tried to remember the larger numbers as : "LCD" and "M"

"LCD" is type of TV so, I remember the numeric order by the spelling.

L = 50

C = 100 (the word Century also comes to mind)

D = 500

M = 1,000 (I think MEGA)

Best of luck to you on your test next week!

Also another problem with me is the pid, bid, whatever they are all the abbrevations and I have no idea what most of them mean.

I don't know of a pid (except pelvic inflammatory disease) but to remember what bid, tid, qid means try this

bid is twice a day, BIcycle has two wheels..bid=2

tid is three times a day, TRIcycle has three wheels..tid=3

qid is four times a day, a quad (4wheeler off road bike)has 4 wheels.qid=4

q=every

qd=every day

hs=hour of sleep (bedtime)

qhs=every night at bedtime

qod=every other day

now, remember bid is two times a day, NOT nessessarily every 12 hours. Most times a doc will write the order as q12h and not bid if s/he wants the med given every 12 hours.

If you know 1-10 you can go quite far.

because 10=X, 20=XX, 30=XXX (I remember that C=100 by thinking that c=cents 100 cents in a dollar)

Roman Numerals

I = 1 C = 100 V = 5 D = 500 X = 10 M = 1000 L = 50

some of this information might be in appendixes of books you have. taber's cyclopedic medical dictionary actually has a listing in the dictionary for roman numeral and then directs you to the latin and greek nomenclature section of the appendix where, son of a gun, it lists roman numerals from 1 to 1,000,000. here are the roman numerals from my copy of taber's:

(page 2223,
taber's cyclopedic medical dictionary
, 18th edition, published in 1997 by f.a. davis company)

10,000 x (with a line over it)
