If you want to come to a state like California, then you contact our board and ask them what you need to do. Usually it's something simple like submitting your transcripts from school and your RN license to the new state. They will then issue you a license to work in the state of CA. It usually takes several weeks so make sure to do this far in advance of when you plan on starting work.

when you move to another state you get reciprocity of your nursing license. all boards of nursing have websites now. you can go to the website of the state you want to get a license in and it will have directions on how to get your license there if you already have a license in another state. there are different directions if you are getting your license for the first time by nclex examination. the forms are also online to print out. just follow the directions. in most cases you will need to have transcripts from your school of nursing sent to the new state board as well as nclex and fingerprint information. you will also have to pay a processing fee.

if you actually live in another state but only going to school in colorado, consider taking your nclex in your home state. you can do that. it would be a waste of time and money to get licensed in colorado only to have to turn around and get a license where you actually live. weblinks to the boards of nursing are at the very bottom of this page.

colorado is a member state of the nursing licensure compact. this mean as long as you maintain legal residence in the state of colorado you can work in any of the compact states on your colorado license. if you relocate to another compact state and change your legal residence, then your colorado license will become inactive as you can only maintain one compact state license at a time. most compact states will allow you to work for 30 days on your current license, however this might vary from state to state.

if you relocate to a non-compact state then your colorado license will become a single state license allowing to you work as a nurse in colorado only.

as daytonite stated, if you know that you are going to relocate after graduation then take your boards for whichever state that you will be moving to. since the nclex is a standardized test, you can take the test at any authorized testing center that is convenient for you. if you opt to do this, it would be in your best interest to contact that state's board of nursing.

good luck in your studies and future career.
