RN Coder/Auditor

Seriously considering taking an online certified RN Coder/Auditor course. Has anyone taken it? Is this a needed, lucrative field? Any advice?

Thanks

I called clinical coding solutions today. They stated the pay is as low as $1.00 to $2.40 a chart. I am curious about the $30-$50 rate.

I believe it comes down to productivity. I just finished a course for CPC and there were some folks already doing coding with me in the course. I understand that doing 20-30 charts an hour is about what's expected. The exam I just took was 150 questions and you were given 5 hours or two minutes per question to complete it. Some of the questions were based on long operative reports. It can be done.

Hi rntrap,

Got your PM but couldn't figure out how to send a reply. I found my CPC course through the AAPC website and it was being given locally. It was a 14 week, two nights a week for two hours program. I just took my CPC exam and am awaiting results. I do not work for Clinical Coding Solutions but have been in touch with them. They were very polite but informed me to get back to them when I had passed the examination.

Well, I just found out I passed the exam and am now a CPC with the AAPC. As soon as I get my paperwork I will start to put out resumes and see what happens. I'll certainly post back here with any results.

congrats Glenmar...no more bedside care for you right?

Hi 2bnurse-1,

Haven't done bedside nursing in eons. I am also a Licensed Acupuncturist with a small private practice and taught up until earlier this year. I still do home care per diem one day a week to keep up my nursing skills.

My interest in home coding is two fold. First, my wife is disabled secondary to a brain injury a few years back. Although she's made an amazing recovery, uses a walker and can stay home alone she still needs supervision and I would like to be able to stay home a little more. Secondly, I'm 55 years old and I'm looking for something that I can start doing now and will see me through my retirement. Being a remote coder seemed to fit the bill.

The class I took was very challenging and I almost thought I didn't pass the exam. I'm just waiting to receive my paperwork from the AAPC and will start looking for work.

thats awesome Glenmar glad to see that there is few good men like yourself willing to stand by his honey.

keep us posted on your new job? im also interested in this field :)

Have you finished the course? I as well have checked into the AAPC self study program and wanted to know if you had any success with finding a job?

Hi mmc1213,

Yes, I have finished the course and just found out a day or two ago that I passed the exam by going to the AAPC website. For what its worth I am now officially a CPC. I am awaiting my paperwork before I start applying. I had been in contact with someone from Consolidated Coding Solutions back in mid-October who told me that although they currently did not have a position assured me that they wished to have me send them my resume as they only hire RNs with CPC or CCS certification.

I will post back any progress positive or negative. Wish me luck.

Hello

I tried to send you a PM, it wouldn't work... Was wondering how it was going with the coding??? Thank you and take care...:D:redbeathe:D

Well, I've only put out one resume to Clinical Coding Solutions. They did reply back after some time and told me that they did not currently have openings and sometimes nurses wait for a year before a position opens. I was told that my information would be put into their data base. I will get more aggressive in another month or two and will post back here with any results.
