Retired Nurses

Published

I would like to hear from Nurses who have retired with information on how they have filled their time , how have they coped with retirement .

I just feel so lonely , I miss caring for people so much, it's like I am going through a grieving process, I get emotional just thinking about all the people I have cared for and loved.

There must be something I can do to continue making a difference in someway.

Welcome to AN! The largest online nursing community!

We fill our time here....YOu can volunteer at a hospital/facility, offer your services tutoring students.

But we spend a lot of time here!

Welcome!

Work as a "sitter" in home care. Or, better yet, go to a retirement home and volunteer, even to be a sitter. You can take part of the load from the CNAs and nurses on duty by being an extra set of eyes and ears, even if only for one resident. And then, like my former supervisor, go back to work! She went back three times after retiring. When she retired for the final time, she surrendered her RN license to make certain she would not be tempted to go back a fourth time.

The answers above are OK but you are I believe in the UK so what they have advised will not work. Yes you can volunteer but to go into a nursing home requires police checks - whatever the English system is called, it is Disclosure Scotland up here. So not easily done and sometimes not worth the wait or expense. Have you thought about the Samaritans or Citizens Advice? Both good organisations looking for help. What about volunteering in a charity shop or in the local hospital - WRVS? All of these will give you contact and you will be helping.
