Retaking a lab without the lecture

Published

I'm wondering if anyone's been able to retake the lab section of a course without retaking the lecture portion? A few years ago I took A&P II and made an A in the lecture and a C in the lab. Honestly, I selected a bad instructor for the lab. I'm usually skeptical of that excuse, but it can certainly be the case. The lab was held on a Saturday and the instructor told the class that she was only there for the extra money. She breezed through the material and dismissed us and locked up the lab early every week. The exams were created by the department so come test time no one was prepared. We had no time to get our hands on the models and slides which made up a large part of the exams. Long story short, I ended up with a C in the lab. I did very well in the lecture and earned a high A.

The school I attended lists the lab as a co-requisite to the lecture. I'm wondering if anyone's managed to take them separately as a retake? I'll certainly check with the school, but I'm curious as to others' experience.

It really depends on the institution. I've only been to one college where you can take the lab by itself. Speak to an advisor at the college your attending.

My school requires the lab to be taken with the class but then the lab is pass or fail and not a separate letter grade.

i agree, not many schools allow you to take the lab separately as i've learned. my undergrad university made the microbio lab and lecture separate and I took just the lecture b/c of one program I was applying to that didn't require a lab but most every other program did but when I looked around at other universities and CC I found that none of them separated the lab and lecture which sucks

+1 It was like this for me as well. Is there a reason that you want to retake the lab? Is that considered a non passing grade? I could understand if you want to learn the information better, but I can't say that I 'had' to have the lab information for A&P II for nursing school. Don't get me wrong it helped me to understand concepts better, but I don't think the A&P II lab is absolutely necessary.

It depends on your school. In our school, lab & lecture are one course number for A&P. However, Chemistry and Microbiology have a separate course number for the lab. Due to remodeling at our school, I had to take just the lecture portion of Chem over the summer and had to do the lab separately the following semester.
