Report rant

OK, do you all ever have days where you want to smack the person you have to give report to? I ALWAYS seem to get this one particular nurse who everyone hates to give report to and she spends her time criticizing everything I've done and even things that previous shifts have done as though everything is my fault and she's the only competent nurse on the unit. I've been in NICU for 2 years now and have noticed it's fairly common among NICU nurses. I didn't experience this nearly as much before when I did L&D.

No, there is one where I work too. :o

Not in L&D but med/surg. None of the ER nurses do this.

I understand your need to smack though - :uhoh3:

I think we all have a "supernurse" somewhere on our units. Seems NICU nurses tend to be a bit more anal about things, though. JMHO.

Brave is the nurse who tries that on me!

What I hate is when they don't pay attention to the handover ~

Me: Mr Brown's a 73 year old man with insulin-requiring diabetes and PVD. He came in with a necrotic forefoot and had a below-knee amp on the 12th, and is having a daily dressing

Idiot: Why's he having a dressing?

Me (patiently): Because he had a below-knee amputation

Idiot: Did he? When?

Me (less patient): On the 12th

Idiot: Why?

Me (between clenched teeth): Because he had necrosis, diabetes and PVD

I'd rather have that Talanxandra then

Her: "Why is he on a pink blanket? He's a boy"

Me: "Yeah....Ummm... that wasn't my main concern last night, I was a little more concerned with his ph being 7.12"

Her: "And why aren't the pumps on a separate poll?"

Me: "Yeah... again, not my main concern last night, can I tell you what we did about the gases?"

Her: "And why did they wait until he was 2 days old to get an art line in?"

Me: "Yeah... well, seeing as I have never looked after this baby until last night, I don't know why they did what they did last week. Can I tell you about last night?"

Her: "Oh my God! Look at these gases! What were you doing last night?!"

Me (out loud): "Well, we switched him to the jet, gave bicarb and THAM, gave blood, etc"

Me (in my head) "ARE YOU FREAKIN KIDDING ME?!!! YOU CRAZY ^&*&*#@$*! I've been trying to tell you that for 15 minutes!"

ARGH! And I always get her! They even had her name under another baby's the other day and that nurse changed the assignment so she wouldn't be the one giving her report. Can you believe that?

ugh! Sounds like a major PIA.

Definitely agree that there is at least 1 self-proclaimed "supernurse" on any unit. Even L&D :)

Talaxandra - that is exactly what happens to me with a couple of nurses I work with.

Listen to my report please! I just wanna go home. :o

Fergus - We occasionally post an etiquette memo about report which says to be quiet and let the nurse give report and THEN ask questions.

We do have one great nurse who is so tired at 2:45 a.m. that report goes slowly but I can forgive that.
