Relocating to US from UK

Published

Hi

I'm planning to move out to Illinois early in the new year. I'm a RGN with years of oncology/chemotherapy experience and need some help with how to prepare for working in US. Are there any English nurses who have made the transition to working in the US who can advise please?

Thanks

Be aware before you move that the job market is not good here. There are plenty of nurses here already who are are out of work and looking for jobs.

I am going to have to do the same next year. Im a nurse in the UK, currently half way through a masters degree, my partner is from Chicago and we would both like to live there together. However I have heard that getting a nursing licence in the states takes an awfully long time. I have tried to email the nursing board of Illinois a few times however have received no reply. Not sure what the next steps are..

Hi

Moved to Illinois from the UK several weeks ago and am looking for jobs where I don't need a licence as, having looked at what's involved in applying for a licence to work as a nurse, I cannot afford the time involved in waiting without working. I knew it would be difficult but had under anticipated the time, cost, difficulty etc it would take to get a licence.

Can anyone else tell me of their experiences please.

Thank you

You will need to take NCLEX, via a state that accepts overseas nurses, then get a state licence in that state and transfer it to IL.

I think it took me about 3 years in total, I am from UK also.

Depending on your immigration status you might find it difficult to get a SSN too.
