Relocating to Spokane

Hey there,

I'm doing to some research on the Spokane area for possibly relocating this spring/early summer. I have 2 years of med/surg and 1 yr of rehab/LTC experience. I see that there a several facilities hiring currently and was wanting some opinions on what the job market is like and likelihood of being hired from out of state with the current experience I have. I understand there a few nursing programs there in Spokane that "feed" local health facilities on a regular basis. Any facilities I should stay away from? And how about the school districts?

Spokane is NOT a nurse friendly town! The schools of nursing, the poor job market, make it a employers market.

I would go down to Tri Citie, before I would go to Spokane. TriCities has to work at getting workers and nurses, and i thinki that they pay better than Spokane. and i also believe that they offer better benefits that hospitals in Spokane.

The Tricities, is the area in south central Washington, that is made up of Kennick, Pasco, and Richland. Land is cheaper there, the colleges has satteliite campuses,

Itis a reallyan up and coming area. Look intoit. Stay away from Spokane.

The tri-cities all kind of blend together. They are immediately adjacent to one another, with the river passing among them.

Hey there - I'm in the Tri-Cities and I absolutely love working here. I work in Richland (The other two cities are Pasco and Kennewick). Feel free to PM me if you want more information about the working conditions or the area.

Columbia Basin College (columbiabasin.edu) is your only option for LPN-RN in the actual Tri-Cities. Walla Walla and Yakima would be the next nearest ones - WW is about a 45 minute drive and Yakima is a lil over an hour's drive.

Finding a job in a Spokane hospital is a difficult task! I moved home to Washington State last summer and I have never in my career had such a difficult time finding a job!!! I have thirteen years experience in acute care in addition to one year of TCU experience as well as working in long term care prior to nursing school. I applied for jobs at Sacred Heart...neither Deaconess (can't remember there new name!) or the VA hospital was hiring at the time. All I ever heard from Sacred Heart was the same old form letter stating they had "many applicant's we are considering at this time". When I checked my application status on the employment website it always told me it had been "filed".....circular filed I'll bet. I was told by more than one person that they like to hire young new grad nurses because they can pay them a lot less. I ended up getting a job in a small hospital in an outlying community. Funny thing HR told me when I was hired that my former supervisors had nothing but great things to say about me as a nurse and as a person. They also asked the HR employee to let me know how much I'm missed. I won't EVER APPLY AT SACRED HEART AGAIN! After what I've read on this board it really sounds like they don't appreciate their nurses like they should! They didn't want this ol' girl...:nurse:OK, I've finished ranting...LOL...My advice would be don't move here until you have a job!

Thank you all for replying. Jodie- where are you working now, are you at Lincoln? Having the same problem with Sacred Heart jobs come open, I apply and no response. Very frustrating, I figured it would be more difficult for me to obtain a job from out of state, but Im not giving up yet. I understand the Tri Cities is better for nurses but not the area of Wa I want to be so I will be steadfast wait and continue to apply for jobs that come open in the area I want to live. Thanks again!
