relocating to ft.hood

Published

hi everybody, i have some questions. i'm working on my prereqs right now to get into nursing school. we're moving to ft.hood, texas though here sometime in the next couple of months, and from what i saw they have different ones than here. i only checked out one school so far. my question, does anybody know some schools or programms in that area for RN or LPN? i would like to check out as much as possible before moving there but don't know where to look. just don't want to waste anymore time than i have to with doing prereqs all over. and does anybody know if i do the LPN first and then Rn, can i get financial aid for the lpn programm? i am so lost with all this. i'm in the middle of a cna class right now and planned on applying to nursing school in spring and now it seems like i have to start over again.

thanks

I don't have any info for you, but just wanted to say good luck! I was much like you 10 years ago when we were coming out of Korea (was an accounting major) and ended up driving from Ft. Rucker to the Bragg area twice for testing and interviewing. Now, my husband is retiring and my ability to be employable takes so much pressure off him! I hope everything works out well for you and enjoy Ft. Hood--I have several friends that love it there!

There are several nursing schools in the Fort Hood area, I live near there.

Central Texas College Killeen TX (ADN)

Temple College Temple TX LVN, (ADN)

University of Mary Hardin Baylor Belton TX (BSN)

All three are in the same county as Fort Hood, and all have RN programs. I know Temple College has a LVN program and a LVN-RN bridge program, but the bridging program only takes about 10 students a year.

Also once you have finished your first semester at an RN program, many of the area hospitals will hire you as a Student Nurse Tech, ( you work as an aide), and for the SNT you write your own schedule and only have to work a requirement of 2-4 shifts a month after orientation, and orientation is always scheduled during winter or spring break.

There is another nursing school in McClennan county, but that would be too far a drive from Killeen I think.

Specializes in ER, ICU, L&D, OR.

Moving to Fort Hood, you poor person.

Sorry I don't really have any info for you...I just wanted to say it is good to know there are other military spouses on here....so I may have to vent a little more..lol. We are currently at Fort Knox but may be moving soon?..Well anyways...Good Luck to you!!!

WELCOME! I just graduated from CTC in May. CTC has both the LVN and RN program as well as an LVN-RN bridge. It's an ADN program, so if you want to go straight for your BSN, Mary-Hardin Baylor is the closest...it's also a good program. You can get financial aid at CTC as long as you're enrolled at least half time (8 credit hours). Prereq's include A&P I, Psych, Integrated Software, Comp&Rhet I, Intro to Nursing. I recommend going to the website, and getting a copy of the degree plan; I strongly suggest taking as many (if not all) of the non-nursing courses before starting the program. Having your CNA license is good because I believe they recently made it a requirement. If you have further questions email me privately and I'll be happy to answer if I can.

I am starting the LVN program at central texas college next month, and I am currently taking a CNA course at temple college(about 25 minutes away from killeen). I think both are good colleges, CTC is just closer to my home. You dont have to be a CNA to get into either of the programs. CTC also has a LVN to RN bridge program which I plan on doing after I become an LVN. There are no pre-reqs to the LVN program besides passing the NET and placement test. For the RN program, they recently changed the pre-reqs. You will need to take biology before you can take anatomy and physiology, and they will no longer require integrated software applications. Here is the website, you can click on the ADN packet link to see the new degree plan.

PM me if you have any more questions.

Kileen would be the closest town for the programs listed in another posting.

Ft Hood is very big. To me it is a great area of Texas. It is considered Texas Hill Country. A lot of different culture backgrounds there with a lot of farming. The area has grown considerably in the past 25 years.

Gatesville, Texas is not far from Ft Hood. It is north of Ft Hood. I recall as a kid seeing tanks go across the highway. An in-law relative went to an LVN school there in the 80s but I do not know if it is still there. I know there is a hospital there.

You might check out the cities Kileen and Gatesville because it will give you an idea of the communities and might have links. Try nursing+school+city in some searches.

Best of luck!
