Relocating to Carson City : what to expect?

Hello everyone!

I am thinking about relocating to Carson City for a job that has a good wage and differentials and a relocation bonus. I have done some reading about Carson City online and I am reluctant to move to such a small city due to my preferences to live in first tier cities. Unfortunately the economy is so bad and this seems like a good job, even if is 12 hour night shifts.

What is the general culture in Carson City? What have been your experiences working as a nurse there? I don't have a car because I've lived in big cities for so long so I know I'll eventually need to get a car. I am at my wit's end after discovering the job market is so dry in CA that I am afraid of making another mistake by moving to Carson City.

Any advice or firsthand information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Well I am still in nursing school but from what I can tell from clinical the nurses at Carson Tahoe are very nice and friendly. The winters can get cold and you'll also have to get used to driving in snow. There's also not really a whole lot to do in Carson City unless you like gambling however you can drive up to Lake Tahoe which takes about 30 minutes. Lake Tahoe does have activities like skiing and snowboarding available. The community tends to be conservative republicans as is most of Nevada besides the Vegas area which tends to be more liberal. Carson City like most of Nevada is in a financial mess right now so you'll see lots of empty store fronts and unused office space. I wouldn't recommend living in Carson City if you have or are planning to have kids however because the schools with the exception of the college aren't very good. Eagle Valley middle school at the time I attended it was full of thugs and bullies and I can't imagine it has gotten much better. Also the High school is severely overcrowded with students. Hopefully this was helpful and good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I live in Reno, which is about a 25 mile drive for me to Carson City. I can tell you as a former NYC(er) that if you are looking for first tier cities this may not be the best option for you. However, as another person stated, unless you are into winter activities and gambling, there is not much else here. Oh, and buffets are a big thing here too. LOL

My DH and I are only sticking around here long enough to see if I get into nursing school in January. If I don't, we are leaving. He works as an RN and if you become unsatisfied with a hospital then there are only a few hospitals one can work for here.

As for a car, you will definitely need one. If this is not an option, you may want to check into the public transportation schedule to see if that will be a good alternative for you.

Have you looked into areas such as Dallas, TX, and Phoenix, AZ? We lived in Phoenix prior to Reno and that is where my DH got his new grad position when he graduated. Dallas is aggressively recruiting too. Just some suggestions. :-)

If you are trying to stay close to CA, have you looked into living in NW Reno and commuting to Carson City? I don't know about the schools as we do not have small children, but I can tell you that it is a very nice area to live in. But again, you will need a car.

I hope this helps and good luck to you!
