Reading the MAR

Based on the MAR, how do I know if a medication is an IV push. Most of the time, the MARs at my facility doesn't actually say "IV Push" next to a medication.

There was no order referring to how the medication was to be administered.

I didn't say "IV" or "PO" or any other designation of the route?

It said IV, but not whether it was IV push.

Whether it's IV push or piggyback are just two different ways of setting up a medication to be administered IV.  Typically the physician shouldn't be attempting to designate this.  The recommendations for administering the ordered medication for the ordered route should be what determines this, in addition to sometimes patient or circumstance-specific criteria.

Our facility always states what type of IV administration, whether it's push or piggyback. It never just says "IV". IMO the physician should absolutely state how it should be given, especially since some nurses can't push a few specific IVP meds. Just my two cents!
