Hello,

I'm a nursing student with a question that I need assistance with the answer. I told the family I would reply with an answer within a few days.

A dialysis patient has 80 boxes of Paratineal, included in the box is 6 red bags, 6 yellow, and 6 green bags in a box. Each box weighs about 35 pounds. The hospital will not take the medication and the police department tried to retrieve this medication however the water department stated they can't dump it down the drains. So this family has this abundance of medicine in their home occupying space. The patient was hospitalized for some time however the medicine kept coming. Now they asked me to help and I need someone else's assistance on how to direct this family in the proper removal of this medication. Remember they have a total of 80 boxes. Any solutions????

Refer them to the social worker at the clinic. Why didn't you tell your instructor?

Specializes in RN, BSN, CHDN.

They need to speak with their PD nurse they will have been informed of what to do in case of hospitalisation

They should have called their supplier and had the deliveries stopped, but that's neither here nor there at this point.

Agree with Madwife2002. They should contact their PD RN.

Thank You for your response Guttercat.

Have them contact their supplier, not the delivery driver to see if they would take back the product. If they won't just have them drain them down the drain. It is mostly dextrose and won't hurt a thing. Or put it out in the garden, but watch out for ants it might attract.
