question about paid days off

Don't know if this has been asked before, can't find anything, so.......

How much paid time off are US nurses allowed? I know it will probably vary from hospital to hospital or State to State, but what's the average? Also, I think I remember reading somewhere about 'accruing' paid time off, can anyone explain?

Depending on your hospital, it is usually two weeks off to start, but you also have legal holidays thrown in as days off, so that is you work the holiday, you get an extra day off in return. Some are also combining sick days off into the same pot and call it PTO which means paid time off. It can actually grow to over four weeks or so, again depending on your facility. It won't be the six weeks that most of the European countries get.

Also depending on the shift that you are working, if 8 hours, then you can manage a 10 day vacation every three months or so, an if 12 hours, you can get one week almost anytime that you want, as you can put all of your days together, and then have the others off, without using any vacation time. :)

I have been told (and got it in writing) that I will have 25 PTO

That includes vacation as well as sick. On an eight hour day, that is about five weeks. :)

Hi Suzanne: i have another question regarding vacations. here in Uruguay when we go on vacation we are also paid acertain amount of money, less than amonthe's salary, in addition to the days paid.It's called vacation salary. Does it applie in America too? Thank you, Faby

No, you only get the salary that you would be getting if you worked those days.
