I live in Canada, so I'm not much help on the US rules, but I recommend the IV course, and the maternity speciality courses for any RPN/LPNs entering L&D.

I don't know of any facilities that hire LPNs for OB/L&D. Where I used to work, we had one LPN (in her 70s, had worked there forever) who was grandfathered in, and she just worked well nursery.

Can LPNs do primary assessments? That would probably preclude a lot of work in L&D.

Im in AZ, but we don't use LPN's at our hospital for anything. I was an LPN in WA state and worked mother/ baby (but this was a long time ago, (93-98).

Specializes in NICU.

I work in Florida, and the hospital I work at does not typically hire LPNs for L&D. We do have two LPNs that are also Surgical Techs (dual certified) and they don't take a patient assignment. They work under the supervision of the RN, but are mainly there to scrub.

We have no LPNs in Nursery or the NICU.

There used to be one LPN on Postpartum, but she left and they replaced her with a RN.

ACLS is great to have, but as an LPN you cannot push any drugs, so it may or may not make a difference.

Best thing I can recommend for you to do is to speak with the nurse manager over maternal child health at the facility you are interested in working at and find out if they hire LPNs and what capacity they work in. Also, what training they want you to have.

Good luck to you!!
