Problem:
I am now CPNE available and have a situation. I am an LPN and work as a training nurse.. No nights/weekends/holidays/timecards etc... I am being offered a FT 12 hour shift position on a M/S floor at a large teaching hospital. I originally intended to get an internship in the ER or ICU after graduation but with this offer would it be better to take the new position to help me pass my CPNE and get my foot in the door at the hospital ? I am sooo confused. My job is cushy for the most part but I have some bigger goals to think about as well. I would also go back to nights which is my shift of preference.

Sounds like this new job would be a good move for you! I was never an LPN and I've only ever worked ER, so I have no clue about those aspects of the situation. But it's great that you have this opportunity -- congrats!
I know, that was a zero on the helpful scale. LOL.
Thanx Lunah ! You gave me exactly what I was looking for. A valid opinion.

THe CPNE is definitely geared towards someone who works in a hospital environment. A med-surg floor in a hospital will give you lots of overall experience with a wide range of diseases and procedures as well as age groups. You will need to really stay focused on study time for the CPNE. There will be so much to learn going to a med surg floor, that you will be overwhelmed just with all you have to learn to do. It will be easy to come home after those 12 hr shifts so exhausted that you never want to spend time working on the CPNE.
I think this is a great opportunity for you. You will just have to be very disciplined and focused and no excuses!

Sounds to me as if someone is seeing that you get a good opportunity, not only jobwise but an opportunity to help with the CPNE. At this job, once settled in, you can (to a point) practice for the CPNE. At least you are being exposed to the idea of walking into a room and approaching a patient. I think all in all, you are going in a good direction. Wishing you all the best for success with the CPNE and success in your new job.

Keep in mind the "NO nursing shortage situation." I am south of Boston and passed CPNE in MAY, NCLEX in July and can not get in a hospital other than med-surg per diem. I was an LPN 3yrs have several certifications and there are just no openings here. So if you can get into a hospital now as an LPN, not only are you in the door, but you will have lots of practice following care plans, walking into pt rooms and doing your thing, and being familiar with equipment etc. My time as a sub-acute care LPN took care of the clinical aspects of CPNE, it was my nerves that made it a tough experience. Good Luck!!

i agree with all...take the job and get the experience under your belt. if you look at most job postings, they highly prefer 1 yr or more of med/surg experience. get that and you can go anywhere :)
i am having a hard time finding a job here in nh and i passed nclex late august and i have 11yrs medic plus 4yrs emt experience. still, hasn't helped me much, they want "hospital" experience.
good luck with your decison and cpne!!!!
