Question for CNAs

Published

I plan on getting my CNA this summer before I start college in the fall and I'm very much excited but I can't help the fact that I'm a bit worried if I'm "fit enough" I've posted a question on here about this before and got positive feedback but I'm still questionable if I'm equipped for the job because of my weight. I'm 5'4 and weigh 115pds. My question Is there a lot of small CNAs that do a good job because I know working in LTC requires lifting. I love helping people and although I've heard being a CNA in LTC is hard work I feel up to the challenge. I want to do and I'm going to try my best to succeed at it.

One of the best CNAs I ever worked with was 4'9" and probably weighed 99 pounds soaking wet. Size generally doesn't matter. Ability and willingness to do the job to the best of your ability does.

You got your positive feedback from a previous post. It sounds like you are unsure if you keep posting the same question. Don't take it the wrong way, but if you don't know you can handle the lifting, then you won't be able too.

Thank You for your positive feed back @mstearns09 I really appreciate that. I think I'll do a great job. I have a drive to help others and I get my job done regardless of the circumstances I am under. We all have hesitations sometimes on things we have never done before that we want to do but all things can be done through Christ and determination. I look forward to taking my CNA Course this summer & Thank you for your feedback as well. @RInursingstudent

A small person can have a lot of strength and stamina. Your muscles will get used to the job you are doing! Though always be sure to use proper body mechanics. Being a CNA is tough on the body, so use every method to keep yourself healthy!

Specializes in LTC, Memory loss, PDN.

look at it this way

the patients are fragile

Hulk Hogan maybe able to transfer the whole hall

by himself, but surely injury to pt.s would be the result

If you decide to become a cna try and drop the habit of doubting yourself. The nursing/cna profession is all about teamwork. Most patients are considered a 2 person lift anyway. Find a partner and you will be fine. They have mechanical means to pick up pts as well as the sheet that is placed under the pt. Even though someone is strong enough to pick up a Pt by themselves doesn't mean they should. I've seen pts man-handled because the cna can "do it by themselves".

It will be hard at first... it is for everyone. You'll find yourself getting stronger every day though. You can do it!
