Question about clinicals??

i was wondering about clinicals. do you get to choose what hospital and what department you go to? or does the school choose for you? exactly how does that work? i'm just curious to see what i've got to look foward to.

We got to choose everything...professor, hospital, pt, day of the week. Once we were at the hospital, our professor picked the floors, but then rotated us after a couple of weeks.

It will depend on the school as you know but at my school (BSN program) we have clinicals either Mon/Tues or Tues/Wed for the junior year. 12 hours a week first year junior year, 24 hours a week senior year, days or evenings (sometime no choice in that--some clinicals are ONLY days or ONLY evenings. Other times you can request days or evenings but your not guarunteed anything).

Our first semester for example we have Med/Surg for 8 weeks and then Psych for 8 weeks (starting the first day of class).

I actually didn't even find out my clinical schedual until the FIRST day of nursing school and had to be at clinicals THAT same day! Ughhh.

how can you possibly arrange for child care that way? that seems a bit extreme.

I don't know what our schedule be exactly but from looking at the catalog this spring it looks like they have 12 hour clinicals mon/tue I don't know if it will be the same when I pull around next spring but I am sort of going to plan on that for now.

I would suggest contacting the school you are interested or if your in then look at the class schedules most schools even post this online now.

At my school you get to put a request in where you want to go. Obviously they have to have clinical where you request. They won't let you go somewhere where one of the clinical instructors doesn't go. We put our request in and tell why, (ie car pool with someone, you live in the area etc...) then you put in where you'd like to go if your 1st request isn't met. Usually as long as you have clinical sites there you can get where your request. Sometimes you can choose they day of the week if they have a tues or thurs option. Every school is different, but I hope this helps.
