I have been working neuro step-down at a major medical center that is also certified as a stroke center. They have a wonderful neuro program and outstanding docs. I have decided to pursue an ANP and will start in January--I'm hoping to be a Neuroscience NP. I would like to do ACNP, but there are no programs in my area, unfortunately. My question is whether or not that is a feasible option to work neuro with an ANP versus an ACNP? I'd like to stay in the hospital and hopefully work in our neuro critical care unit (they have several NP's on staff). I am hoping that once I get my ANP, I can someday to a post-master's certificate if any of the universities near me start an ACNP program, but for now I will stick with ANP.
Any advice?? Thanks!

Doesn't an ANP deal more with chronic disease, health promotion, and health maintenance? Maybe FNP would give you more flexibility and broader base in the hospital setting.
The ANP does have more of the focus on prevention and health maintenance, but so does the FNP. The only big difference is that the ANP doesn't do Peds, so there is more opportunity during clinical hours to spend with different types of specialists. I know some ANP students who have worked with cardiologists and neurologists, and that appeals to me.
I'm hearing that most of the NP's at the hospital are ANP's, so it looks like that is the route I will take!

I guess depends on what area your in.. Most of the NPs in the hospitals here are FNP's.
