UCLA New Grad Residency Winter 2017
My Status did change on Jan 17th. On December 28th it said offered extended/accepted (after they called me). Then on Jaunary 17th it changed to Alternate applicant selected, and then the same day I got an email saying UCLA was sorry that I had not been selected to be a part of the New Graduate RN program for Winter 2017. I knew something was wrong because I had literally scheduled to fill out new hire paperwork the day before and had received the online paperwork and my account info that very day. I called and they said it was from the other unit that didn't hire me...? I just said "sure." Not cool to receive an email regretting to inform you you haven't been hired after you've been hired regardless of it being another unit lol. Their system seems to be a little off at times. I'd call if I were you. Did you get an offer via phone call?

UCLA New Grad Residency Winter 2017
Don't worry, a TON of us are still waiting. This is between 2 hospitals so there are a lot of applicants they will be hiring. They said offers would "start" going out December 19th, so technically it could be even later! *silently crying* The units that have called candidates either 1. had their interviewes early on in November, probably over one day instead of split 2. Had more spots available in their unit to hire, which made the decision easier or 3. were just on their game and are efficient! Hang in there!! The closer it gets, the harder it is to wait.

Cedars-Sinai New Grad Program Spring 2017
That video interview was NOT FUN lol. The questions were not what I was expecting at all. Harder than UCLA's questions for sure. Just not typical, caught me off guard. I can't remember who gave me the info, but yes, I think most go to med-surg. However, that's not always the case, I know a new grad that went straight to oncology... so hmm? I know for sure you cannot go straight into the ED until being there for 6 months. Yes, the wait is truly agonizing with UCLA. Thanksgiving really got in the way and they are really taking their time. There were 2 choices of dates for interviews and I chose November 18, but then the second date was November 28, way later! Only a few more days now! the wait is almost over woohoo!!!!

USC Keck March 2017
They are pretty late in the game. There's no communication whatsoever. I forgot to add my transcripts to my application and tried emailing them and got no response back. I'm hoping it won't be a big deal, unless they are excluding people based on following the directions to a T Called HR late November to ask about when they may call and they said it was a "different department they don't communicate with and they had no idea." :/ I won't hold my breath for a call lol

Cedars-Sinai New Grad Program Spring 2017
Just an update for everyone (because I know how it feels to be in the dark!), Cedars sent out a request for a one way video interview on Monday 12/12 and it is due by Wednesday 12/14 11:59pm. They will choose candidates from those videos and hold a large one day interview of approx. 50-60 candidates with nurse educators and nurse managers the first week* of January. Decisions will be made within a week* of the interview day. They hope to hire 30-40 new grads, so if you make it to the interview, the odds are in your favor. *This info was given to me mid November and the application opening date was already pushed back from the original info I was given, so the rest of the timeline could be pushed back as well. The info was what would happen in a "perfect world" too, so I'm not holding them to it exactly. I was just happy the person I spoke with was nice enough to share this with me. Definitely a good guideline. It is nice that their hiring process is extremely short compared to the agonizing 3 month hiring process with UCLA, USC KECK(who i have yet to hear from?) hospitals. Good luck to everyone! Hope this calms your nerves and gives you peace of mind

How to get involved in community as new grad RN??
I'm a New Grad and I want to be more involved... I'm in the process of getting a job at hospitals here in Los Angeles. Residency programs are starting to interview/hire, etc. In the meantime, I'm bored! I want to get involved. I've looked into the red cross and all volunteer opportunities I'm interested in require 3 years in the ED, etc. I'm not yet part of a hospital so there aren't committees I can be a part of that I easily have access to or know about. Clinics in Los Angeles are so nit picky, wanting you to write an essay and send a resume in and "maybe" they will contact you if they think you're qualified enough... lol it's a bit ridiculous! I'd be working for free for goodness sake! Any ideas? 1. Is anyone a part of a national or regional organization you can tell me about? 2. How does one get involved in say the ANA and what could you even do? or any nursing association for that matter? Leadership roles? 3. How do you give back or what do you guys do to be involved in your community as a nurse?

transfer from OR to ER?
Thanks for the advice! Kind of what I figured. I think I am in a good position to get a Med-surg or PICU position if I pass on the OR offer. I've had interviews and all seemed to go really well. The OR was just a sure thing, and it was offered before the other possible positions would have a chance to be offered. So kind of risky to pass on it... and you're right, it's extremely tough nowadays to secure a job. Lots of hoops to jump through, but I think I'll hold out.

I mean the program does start in April, so maybe they are just taking their time? Hm...

NewGrad OR prgm mistake?
This kind of confirmed what I was already thinking. Nurses switch around all the time. It seems like the one profession where it's actually almost encouraged. However, I can see that the OR is so specialized it would be hard to switch over. I was not able to shadow in the OR. I've toured an OR before and seen(for seconds) procedures happening, but that's about it. So it would be a big risk, whereas I know I love pediatrics and I love the ED. Guess I'll just keep holding out! Thanks for your reply though, helped a lot! :)

NewGrad OR prgm mistake?
Hey all, So I'd really love to hear your opinions! I have the chance to start off as a new grad in the OR. I think my biggest concern is, if I don't end up liking it...how hard will it be for me to transfer out to another unit like say the Emergency Department, or Pediatrics? I've heard that other specialties don't respect the work OR nurses do and often say that the skills don't transfer well. I don't want to be looked over because I was in the OR. And before you answer, know that I do know it's hard intense work in the OR. I've just "heard" other specialties think it's so different it doesn't really transfer well. Would I have a problem later? I mean, I could end up loving the OR, but still I'd like some input. It's a big decision. Thanks!

transfer from OR to ER?
Ok guys, So I'm for the ER all the way. Had my practicum there and fell in love, did great too! Could have gotten hired there, but I moved back to my home state(had no choice). However, I'm a new grad, in Los Angeles none the less. Chances of getting in an ER to start are slim to none. I have the opportunity to get into a great OR program. If I ended up not liking it, how hard would it be for me to get hired on at an ER? I've heard a lot of other specialties not considering the OR nurses to have transferrable skills when it comes to floor nursing? am I wrong? I just don't want to pigeonhole myself into the OR and have a hard time getting hired on elsewhere if I hate it! I would have to commit to two years bottom line, but after that...? Any input would be great! The more info the better. Thanks so much.

UCLA New Grad Residency Winter 2017
So I'm not sure if anyone is wondering about Peds anymore. Let me just say... the interview was an intense event. Had interview early morning with unit directors in a building separate from the hospitals, then I went to both Ronald Regan and UCLA SM afterwords for second interviews with nurse managers and then floor staff! I definitely got my elevator speech down lol. Be ready for pannels! I was was not expecting it at all but think it went really great! I was psyched to get to meet everyone in one day and see the units. So...be prepared! All in all it took 3 hours or so, not including commute time. good luck everyone. P.S. Only 4 spots open between both hospitals. 2 @SM and 2@ronald regan
