How is staffing in pacu? Should there always be at least 2 nurses in the same room at all times?
I was offered a position as a Recovery nurse for an ambulatory surgery center. In recovery (California), there should always be 2 licensed professionals in the same room/unit in case of an emergency/code. The ASC also has what is called an “office based lab OBL” upstairs apart form the ASC and was told that I would sometimes float upstairs and recover vascular patients from av fistula procedures. I asked if there was going to be another nurse with me and he responded “no”. His argument is that because it’s an “office based lab” they operate differently than an ASC and therefore would not require a 2nd nurse. However, the patient is still receiving sedation (conscious sedation). And this is also something new that has been implemented. Can someone clarify? from aspan.org The intent of this standard (having 2 nurses in pacific) is that the qualified Phase I perianesthesia registered nurse who is providing care to a Phase I patient is not left alone with the patient at any time. The expectation is that the Phase I perianesthesia registered nurse is at the bedside providing direct patient care. The second registered nurse should be able to directly hear a call for assistance AND be immediately available to assist. The qualifications of the second registered nurse should reflect patient acuity as well as the number of patients in the Phase I level of care.

Renegotiating pay rate... is it too late?
Thank you. I plan to reach out to HR to clarify. If there was a mistake, how should I approach the salary concern with them? Any suggestions? As I’ve already technically accepted the job offer but haven’t signed any paperwork yet.

back ground: currently employed as a per diem RN at an outpatient surgery center in Souther California (Inland empire) where GI procedures are performed and other surgical procedures. Recently applied for another RN per diem position at a medical facility. I was recently contacted to do a phone interview. During my phone interview she mentioned what they perform "GI procedures" and asked about my experience. A few days later, I was offered a rate of 45.00/hr as a per diem nurse. The nursing supervisor who interviewed me sent this from HR regarding my pay rate "You can offer 45.00/hr to Nurse B. for the RN, Surgery Center Per Diem position. I accepted. After I accepted, I went to visit the facility to meet the staff and had a in person interview with the same nursing supervisor. During this time the GI nursing supervisor mentioned there was an outpatient surgery center across the street. I didn't think much of it, I was just so excited to be given the opportunity to work for this center as a PREOP/PACU nurse and possibly be trained to be in the GI room and do conscious sedation for these procedures. Now that I look back and after listening to a recent voice message by HR; There were 2 job openings that were listed and now I am unsure which I applied for originally and which position HR is basing my pay rate from. The 2 positions were 1. RN, Surgery Center (PACU/Pre-Op) and 2. RN, Pre-Op/ PACU/GI. I met with the GI lab nursing director. And when we spoke over the phone I knew this position was for GI procedures. My confusion now comes from not knowing if I was being offered a rate for the RN surgery center across the street from the medical center. Did HR make a mistake and based the pay rate based on what a surgery center nurses gets paid? Was there some type of misunderstanding and HR thinks I'm accepting a posting fromt the outpatient surgery center as opposed to the GI lab PREOP/PACU position where the RN would be performing conscious sedation instead of the anesthesiologist? Im so confused because I received a voice mail by HR asking that I schedule a time to fill out paperwork for the RN surgery center position that I recently accepted. Would the pay rate differ within these 2 jobs that I listed? IF so, how should I bring this up to their attention. I would imagine since there are no anesthesiologist when performing these GI procedures and the RNs do the conscious sedation, the pay rate would be a little more than that of an outpatient surgery center? Is it too late to renegotiate pay rate? I still haven't gone in to sign paperwork. thanks everyone!

do per diem nurses qualify for unemployment
. I guess my main concern is wether or not I qualify for unemployment as a per diem. I know full time and part time employees would qualify, but I’m uncertain if per diem employees qualify. As far as work, Hours have been reduced and I’ve taken shifts but have been cancelled a day prior.

I’m in the same boat as you. I haven’t been called in 2 weeks. On top of that I’m having issues with childcare even if offered a shift. When you find out the answer please keep us posted, I’d like to know if per diems qualify for unemployment too. And how’d that be calculated. Thanks and goodluck

Advice on what steps to take next after interview to land the job
One week ago I had an interview with the DON for a RN position at a local hospital. At the end of the interview the DON gave me her business card. I followed up with a thank you email. She notified me she was going to finish interviews in 3 days and would let me know by then. I didn’t hear back from her so I emailed her back showing her my continued interest and if she had any updates. She replied, “I have filled the position with a candidate with experience however I am trying to get another position approved. Please be patient with me as we go through this approval process” Any advice on what to reply back. I really want this position . I recently landed a per diem position a few days ago at an outpatient center and will be getting the experience the other nurse had over me. Should I mention anything about it to the DON?
