It is absolutely possible. I only held retail jobs while completing my BSN and I landed a new grad position. Since you work in a hospital, your internal status really gives you a boost even if the position isn't directly involving patient care. Like you said, senior preceptorship plays a big factor; therefore, pick (if allowed) the specialty of your choice! It will make you more desirable if managers see that you precepted in units similar to theirs. TIP: Consider your senior preceptorship as a long interview. Showcase your skills, knowledge, team dynamic, and motivation. At the end of your preceptorship, drop off your portfolio with the unit manager. It doesn't hurt and if the nurses on the floor enjoyed your help, they'll even recommend you! Best of luck and don't give up!

No idea, he wasn't specific. I assume they didn't make any form of statement is because applicants that precepted in the ICU can still be hired for other units. According to the recruiter (he gave a presentation at my school), they send your application to units that most resemble your preceptorship. eg. Precepted in ICU, your application will be sent to ICU, stepdown units, or units where the manager requested only applicants that had ICU preceptorship. So we still have a chance even if ICU is off the table, but I would still prefer ICU. Hoping it's not true. Guess we'll find out soon.

Some units are starting to call. I know OR, Peds, L&D, Transplant, and CTPCU already sent invites. Not sure how true this is, but my friend that's in their new grad program told me that no ICU position will be offered due to previous incidents with ICU new grads. ? Hopefully they reverted their decision for this cohort. Anyone heard back yet?

Physics? I don't think that's one of our pre-reqs. Is this for studying for the TEAS?

Ahh, California... One of the most competitive state for nursing programs. It's going to be tough, but if this is your passion then do what it takes! Most BSN programs in California requires a minimum of a 3.0 to apply, and majority of the accepted applicants have GPAs that ranges from 3.7-4.0. Therefore, what I recommend is to retake pre-reqs to bump up your GPA. It might delay your initial application date, but if you score well, it will tremendously increase your chance in getting in a program. I'm not familiar with ADN programs, so i'm practically no help there. If money isn't an issue, then maybe consider for-profit schools (beware) or privates (some privates has very high standards too). Make sure you talk to your university's advisors before making a haste decision. Good Luck!

Northern Californian here! I applied to two programs: Stanislaus and Sac State. Don't quote me on this, but I believe all the CSUs requires the TEAS. Not sure on private, community, and for-profit schools. Avg GPA: 4.0 Major GPA: 4.0 TEAS: 86%

I emailed them. You won't need to send another ITE with the decline checked, just a simple explanation why you're declining.

Oh! I officially decline their offer on November 15, so hopefully they called or preparing to call the next alternative! Good Luck!

I also wonder this. According to the 12-14 catalog, "Pharmacology must be completed prior to or concurrent with the first semester nursing courses." However, this sentence is nonexistent in the 15-16 catalog. Does that mean we're not required to take NURS 14 (Pharmacology) anymore, since it's integrated into the curriculum?

Congratulation! One step closer to applying, so keep going strong! I took A&P 1 a year ago and A&P 2 last semester, and absolutely loved every bit of it. Got A's in both. Now Chemistry was a different story. Got an A still, but hated it.

My admission adviser at my school recommended me to accept the offer as a precaution. I actually might be attending Stan, since my first-choice school released an update and it doesn't seem like I have a chance.

I was also accepted, but will probably decline their offer. Congratulation to all, and if you're an alternative, may the odds be ever in your favor.

Ahh so like a preliminary announcement. Hopefully! I was planning to apply to SF State also, but I only had 6/8 pre-reqs done, so my only options were Sac State and Stan State.

Hopefully, but I don't think it's likely. Going by statistics, there should be around 250-300 applicants, and it should take them at least two more week to organize the point rankings. Sadly, it seems like we won't hear our decision till late November. Anyone applied anywhere else than Sac State?

Make sure to check your University and nursing programs' policy on retakes. For example, the nursing programs I'm applying to only considers your first passing attempt (C and above), and any retakes in any institution to obtain a better grade will not be accepted. If your school allows retakes, then definitely go for it! I would recommend retaking A&P 1, not only to help raise your GPA, but because it's a foundation course that will always be relevant in healthcare. As you stated, nursing programs are competitive; therefore, do what you believe is best to maximize your chances! You got this, good luck!

I'm also applying for Sac State, but my total point isn't that great (borderline cutoff). I expect to be waitlisted there, but if I don't even come close to getting accepted, then I'll probably wait a semester to apply with a higher point. Stanislaus is basically my fall back plan as of right now. That's if I get accepted to Stan. Lol.

Greetings! I'm applying for Sac State with 79 points. Not the best, but hopefully it's enough to make it on the single-digit waitlist. If all fails, I'll apply again next semester and have my Health-Related 100 hours done to total my points to 82.
