Hurricanes are predictable? Hardly. Take a look at Florence over the past couple of days. No one knows for sure where "she" is going to hit until it actually happens.

Recently, I had a retired private practice doctor and a retired RN as patients. I didn't find this information out, though, until about halfway through my second day with each of them. Did it change the way that I cared for them? Nope.I continued on just as I had before I discovered they were retired healthcare professionals. At the beginning of November, I had an outpatient procedure done, and it was the first time I'd been in the patient role since becoming a nurse three years ago. I have to admit that it was strange for me being on the other side of things!

"I don't take insulin at home, so I'm not taking it here." Never mind the fact that their blood sugar is 300+.

I had an awesome family member the other day tell me that she was going to let the rest of her family know that she was going to be the designated spokesperson so I wouldn't get a ton of calls for updates. She said she knew nurses were busy and she didn't want me to be bothered unnecessarily.

I had a patient peering at me from her doorway, trying to catch my eye, while I was clearly involved with explaining to the husband of my suicide watch patient what was going to happen once she was transferred to the behavioral health unit of another hospital. At one point, she interrupted, saying, "Um, excuse me, can I have my benadryl and dilaudid?" *smh*

I've felt the same type of sensations before, too, mostly in my groin area. Hasn't happened in a long time, but when it did occur, it was so annoying! Glad to see that I'm not the only one who's experienced this!

Sadly, in the hospital system that I work for, even an assisted fall is considered a fall and it counts against our unit. Any time that a patient's body physically touches the floor, it's seen as a fall, no matter the circumstances behind it.
