Patient assignment v. actual patient load
Acuitity is not normally taking into concideration by supervisors, so if we have a floor full of total cares, we still noly get minimal staff. working night shift we are all usually given 5 pt's a piece, with no charge nurse, and covering LPN's depending on how many we have working that night. worse part is days gets angry if the baths aren't done.... (not an actual assignment for nights, but we try to help) and usually 1 RN gives charge report in am, this includes making sure your pt's are ready for days, the entire floor's worth of labs taking care of and any doc's called that needs to be. needless to say it can be a heavy load.

You Know the patient is going bad when...
working on a medical/oncology unit i have seen a lot, mostly we do get dnr's. the latest is 4 am a pt states "i need to get up", nurse taking care of pt in other bed states, "it's 4 in the morning, go back to sleep for a little while, we'll get you up in a bit"........... 6:20 lpn out of room, "pt doesn't look to good"........ call night intern, pt continues..."i need to get up" 7:10, pt passed......... the other was pt on non-rebreather, 89% and normally yelling, resting peacfully and calling nurse honey and sweetheart... i called the family in, not 1 1/2 hrs later the pt passed....... guess even with only a year in you can develop the intuition right?? :bowingpur:saint:

Can I hear some positive things about nursing school?
So, after 10 years out of school, I went back to be a nurse. The associates degree where I attend I am in my third year but entering my second year in clinical and just 3 semesters from graduation( let the countdown begin:lol2: ) . I will say this classes are what you make of them. It's very hard when you have a family to take care of on top of classes and such. for me the majority of my class is older or younger then me. At one point I let the BS catch up with me I then made a decision to just worry about classes and graduating. I am doing great and believe I have made a great friend in the process ( I think) The one thing I can tell you is study when you can, however you can and always remember, most employers do not look at your GPA, So you do the best you can and remember that your best is your best not anyone elses!!!!

CNA before RN
SO HERE'S MY THING; I AM A CNA HAVE BEEN FOR 5 YEARS, I WORK IN LTC AND ALSO I AM IN AN RN PROGRAM IN MY SECOND SEMESTER OF CLINICALS. I HAVE BEEN AN ADVOCATE ALL ALONG OF BEING AN AIDE BEFORE GRADUATION. WORKING IN LTC THERE ARE RN'S WHO HAVE NEVER BEEN AN AIDE, GENERALLY REFUSE TO DO THE WORK OF AN AIDE, ENEV IF IT;S JUST A TRANSFER BECOUSE THE WORK IS "BENEATH THEM" (CAN WE TELL IT'S KINDA A SORE SUBJECT RIGHT NOW:angryfire). BUT THEN YOU HAVE THE ONES WHO WORKED AS AN AIDE THEY ARE USUALLY RIGHT THERE HELPING WHEN THE AIDES ARE OVERWHELMED. SO I AM A TRUE BELIEVER OF WORKING AS AN AIDE FIRST, NOT ONLY DID IT HELP ME FIRST SEMESTER SURPASS MANY OF MY CLASSMATES, YOU ARE MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE ON THE FLOOR IN THE LONG RUN

CNA before RN
she'll have to take the classes again and then retest. that's how ohio works, i almost had to retest due to not working as an aide for almost a year. tell he to check with HR in the hospital where she works, they should be able to help

A Dear Abbey letter. What is your take?
so I am just a student getting ready to finish my first semester with finals in a week, but one of th efirst things we learn is HIPPA and also privacy. Not sure why the woman was embarassed it was her husband:imbar, but yes I do ask people to leave the room. Also last year when my husband was in, the nurses always asked him or myself if we were comfortable being there while they were performing assessments and such. i guess when you are on the floor for so long some of these things may be forgotten. i am a nursing assistant for the past 5 years, and i always ask family to leave the room, even if i am only ambulating to the restroom. just a privacy thing.
