  1. thank you, since im a post masters FNP certificate student, when I applied to other school they were requiring me to do repeat classes with them such as the core adv pharm, patho and so on. in other words I was just being milked for more money just because they didn't get anything out of me for a bsn or msn. a lot of school required I retake courses I had already done with my msn just a "different name" under their institution.
  2. thank you that was my next plan, I was just going to dress up as if going to a job interview and hope I get selected. thank you for your feedback.
  3. Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to me. My background is PICU/PCTICU buuut I live in a city where there is no trauma PICU so I ventured into the non-trauma peds pacu and I work closely with the surgeons NPs. I will pick their brains on any recomendations in that case. thank you so much again I start this fall.
  4. I was told on my post MSN FNP certificate that they will not find you a preceptor for clinicals, unless you have proof of getting denied requests that you get on your own.
  5. Hello Everyone, I've recently interviewed with a school for post MSN- FNP certificate. I was told that I would have to try and find my clinical preceptors before the school actually attemps to place me anywhere and that I would have to show proof of denied preceptorship attempts before they agree to find me placement for my clinicals. is this a common practice? I don't see a disclosure anywhere that states such practice on their website and the school has a descent fee for "student services" every semmester. Also, if I could please get any tips of finding a genuine preceptor, im not a fan of asking NPs that I already have a working relationship with because I woud like an honest feedback and realistic clinical experience versus leaving any room for preferential treatment. any feedback will help! thank you for your time.
  6. Its not a guarantee that you'll have 2 weekends off and it all depends how far from home are you planning to travel to.
  7. I personally only use Airbnb for my first two weeks of the contract ( orientation) to make sure I will be staying there, meaning hospital actually needs me and won't cancel my entire contract. I always ask during interviews what are the chances of extending contract just to have an idea of their needs. Also, if I'm going to a large city (LA, NY, many hospitals using travelers), I book a long term corporate apartment/ studio. Not fully furnished, and just buy the essentials. That saves me a lot of money and if I get cancelled I know there's other local hospitals I can go to and still keep my living arrangements. I've used furnished finders they are nicer then Airbnb price wise ( usually) but prepare to possibly owe any cancelled stays as well.
  8. Depending on the facility you go to they may give you a 12 hr orientation shift on the floor or 2 shifts if the hospital has the flexibility and even then they usually expect you to know everything / handle an assignment. The most they will help with is usually the charting system if you're not familiar. If you take a travel position of your specialty and they require floating just make sure you're confident floating to those areas if not you can ask to not be floated but that may hinder your chances of getting such contract. Also units that you float to usually you don't get a full if any orientation. Always remember the hospital is looking for people to help them because they themselves don't have enough staff half the time. So they do expect a lot from the travelers. Also, look for facilities that are traveler friendly ask during your interviews what is expected of you on orientation.
  9. It all depends if you decide to go to a trauma center or a step down unit. Usually hospitals want recent ICU/floor experience if you do that. But you can find infusion contracts too.
  10. I usually go to hospital dense cities and do 6 month- 11 month leases(rental communities) instead of furnished units/ Airbnb. I buy just what I need ( a mattress) and basic household items and save as much money as I can. Worst case scenario I get cancelled I'm able to jump to a near by hospital OR cancel my lease which will probably be a small fee versus 3 months of rent.
  11. Nope, but I've heard UM has called people from wait lists within a few weeks of program starting so, they do seem to stick to the waitlist rules. Since it said they can call you as late as Jan 3rd if you agreed. Technically if you said not to that I would think you cancelled yourself out of getting a reply if they had decided to call you December 20 with the news that you got in. Not a fan of such short notice. ( Information legitimate from current students/friends)
  12. hi! so excited for you! I am not going to lie it is a challenge to find short term places such as Airbnb, furnished finder and so on with a dog. I traveled almost 3 years with my dog and my husband and it was alway a bit of a challenge. we would just give up other things that we could live without to book a place with him. I had a 16 lbs shih tzu. if your husband is a travel nurse as well and you guys travel together then its more than perfect because you will find many short term places that will allow your dog it will usually just be a bit more expensive. my technique with traveling was to go to big cities that had many hospitals with my specialty and like that I would have more chances of getting another contract if I got canceled for whatever reason low census ect. then I would find apartment buildings that would offer 3-12 months lease and attempt to lease with them. also I would have it as a rule of thumb to book an airbnb or a hotel until my orientation week is over. just to make sure the contract was secure. sometimes you can start at a contract and just by looking at the census of the unit you feel like unless they float you everywhere else your contract will be canceled. needles to say my favorite company so far has been Flexcare medical Staffing. I also did AMN but was not happy with their pay or the way they handle things. I used AMN for my first year and I had everything go wrong as soon as I saw the chance I left them. when looking for an agency make multiple accounts with them ( all are free), once connected to a recruiter because you liked the pay, city and so forth of a position, ask for the details on the contract. I would not give them a SSN just a resume at most and make sure you get it in writing(email/text) that you do not wish to be submitted to so and so position until you're sure you want to go there and have explored all your options. No No rule, do not submit to the same hospital with multiple companies you might still get the job but you will be put on the spot by a recruiter or a hiring manager from that hospital and depending on the agencies they might make your file a Do not hire/do not return flag. when it comes to interviews I personally like to have an actual interview with the managers of the floor or the hiring manager to get all the details that the recruiter can not answer such as uniform specs, lunch break system, floating to units and so forth. I tend to plan vacations around my schedule once I have the job, but travel nurses do request vacation before submitting to the hospital as well it will all depend on the hospital. they may decline to hire you just because they don't want to grant such vacations since they are usually understaffed and need you for a reason. if you would like to learn the taxing and stipends work, please visit Traveltax.com the page will have a little jeep crossing from one side to the other they are travel tax professionals who know all the ins and out of what you need to do to have in order to qualify for your tax free stipends with each contract. I have done my taxes with them and do not regret it. they have an information section just for travel nurses ? hope this bible of a reply helps! good luck! feel free to private message me on here.
