  1. Thanks for all your responses. It's strange because I have been given very strict hours, am exempt, am doing a notable amount of OT, and am essentially a staff nurse due to staffing issues. I will likely change positions as this in not what was explained to me at all during the interview or when I accepted the position. amoLucia, it certainly feels like I am being taken advantage of. It is a smaller company with no HR...

Hello, Quick question. I accepted an exempt nurse supervisor position but have not been provided with a job description and have been doing staff nurse work primarily. I have been working a lot of OT. The contract I signed states I am not eligible for OT. I am in NYC. Do staff nurses have to be paid OT legally? I thought I might have heard somewhere that, that was the case. Thanks.
  3. Hello, If I only started orientation somewhere (2 weeks) and realized it wasn't a good fit (IE never on the floor), do you think it is necessary to put it in an application? Some apps only have space for 5 jobs so I assumed it better to just not include this position- but it is fairly recently... it just doesn't seem relevant. I essentially didn't work there. Thanks!
  4. Nurses are caring, so this might be hard to do, but one of the best pieces of advice I have received when feeling burnt out was to "try not to internalize everything." Yes, it is stressful to be running all of those heparin gtts and a blood transfusion, BUT the patient yelling at you for not having a turkey sandwich... can't let that get to you. You have bigger fish to fry.
  5. Thank you so much for your advice. :)
  6. Hello. I was wondering if anyone had any pointers for accessing a port that is not defined well through the skin. I have a patient with a port that is hard to see. It is a power port and I can not feel the bumps. It always takes me two attempts and I feel terribly. I have gotten mixed messages on whether she should be sitting up or laying down. Any tips? Has anyone else ever missed a port? Thanks, all.
  7. Every nurses' first year of nursing has shifts like this. Like Brianna said, just remember the good moments and hold tight. Learning is a struggle, but you will get there. You have to fall to learn how to walk. With that being said, if you ever feel like your training is not enough to keep your patient's safe and no one will help you, call your supervisor.
  8. I think you handled this perfectly. Even if it seems ridiculous to the family member, you need to protect your patient's privacy.
  9. How do you physically tell someone something?
  10. You will get a job eventually. Just keep applying and all of the sudden, everyone will call you at once and you won't know what to do. Even in NYC, where there is a surplus of nurses, this is true. Don't freak out yet. Also, your fiance sucks.
  11. Nursing school is more difficult than the NCLEX. Its difficulty is dependent on who you are and what school you are enrolled in. You will probably be fine. If not, then you can try again.
  12. I commute an hour and fifteen minutes (on the subway). I like it. I read or listen to music. It's my moment of piece and there is no cell service, so no one can reach me.
