  1. I am having trouble visualizing the cervix on most paps. Not sure what exactly I'm doing wrong. My results have been coming back conclusive so I'm getting a good enough sample but I feel like a lot of times it's a guessing game. Any tips for good visualization?
  2. I have worked salary plus RVU bonus in the past, but not RVU based income. I am looking for insights from those who have done this. Was it worth it? I was told that this company's advanced practice providers typically have a RVU rate of 1.6-1.8. Base salary for first two years is 4700 RVUs, then they readjust income based on your workload. RVUs pay $27.22. According to this, it seems that you would average about 14 patients per day (depending on coding) for their base rate. But the HR specialist told me a story about a woman who had to take a huge paycut because she was out for months due to pregnancy and did not meet the RVU minimums. We are trying to expand our family so now I am concerned because the base rate they provided already seemed low compared to what I would expect. They also have a noncompete with 15 miles of their location if it is the same speciality (which is Primary Care). The company is Sentara is anyone has any experience with them personally.

  4. Interviewed in July and was told I didn't get the job. Received an email early October that I had been selected for a position if I was still interested and started 1/17. I think they expedited the process. I was told that I was the alternate and the first pick turned down the job offer. You know the VA is so backwards though since you don't get an official offer until all background checks and credentialing are completed.
  5. I actually just got hired on as a NP with the VA. I am grade 3 step 3 but was told after one year there would be a review ro determine if I should be promoted to nurse IV. Does anyone habe any insight on what qualifications are required for nurse IV?
  6. I just got hired on as a nurse practitioner grade 3 step 3 at the VA. They said that after a year I could promote to a nurse 4. My question is what type of things are they looking for as a nurse practitioner in order to promote to a nurse 4? Also, can I promote at any point in my career, or just when they do the review after the first year? They made it seem as if I only had one shot to try to make it.to nurse 4.
  7. We are moving to the Ft Belvoir area. Is DC considered a separate "state" for NP licensure? Ie if I want to work in DC but live in VA do I need to get a DC NP license or can I use a VA NP license? If you need one for each, would you recommend getting both to make you more marketable or are there plenty of job opportunities in VA?

  12. Are there any NPs here who have worked contracts on Military bases? I am curious what hiring/interview process was like? I recently applied for a job and they reached out to me asking for my current pay and benefits package where I work now so that they can try to successfully set up a bid. I am curious what the process is if the bid goes through. Also, is the start date flexible or if I chose this job but I have to start ASAP?
  13. Hi all. I was wondering if there are any resources for ordering specific tests or imaging? I am having some difficulty deciding when to order contrast for certain things (like muscular complaints) or what type of view to order for x-rays (especially for knee complaints). I was wondering if there are any good resources or guides?
  14. I have been looking into licensure in other states. Is it accurate that 38 of 50 states are now compact states for RN licensure?? When I first started as a RN about 8 years ago, I think there were only 6 states that were compact. If I have an expired license in a compact state, can I renew it and automatically be apart of the compact states? Do I need to do anything different for compact? If I wanted to be licensed as a NP in multiple states, do I still need to apply for my NP license in each state?
  15. My husband is in the military as an engineer and the idea was that he wouldn't be going overseas most likely unless he "wanted to.". Now, they are trying to groom him toward a career path that will most likely take him overseas. I am wondering if anyone else is a military spouse here and also NP. Were you able to find a job overseas as a NP? I'm extremely stressed about the mere idea of this and how it will affect my career. He may not be stationed at a particular base which means there may not even be a military hospital nearby. I speak a little Spanish but I don't think that will be extremely helpful in most Asian or European countries. How will it look on my resume if I have been out of practice for 5 years? Ugh.
  16. I am looking for more insight or recommendations on working from home as a TeleDoc. Has anyone done this before? My husband is in the military and we will likely be moving from CA to AL for about 10 months. With licensure and credentialing, I'm not sure it makes sense to seek a job in an outpatient clinic. Is TeleDoc something you would recommend? Would I have to get an AL license or multiple licenses, or could I use my CA one and see CA patients? Can I set my own hours and does it have to be full time? Any recommendations for companies to seek out or other areas good for short term placement, such as a Minute Clinic? Any input is appreciated!
  17. I am trying to find a unique baby gift for my nurse anesthetist friend who is pregnant, but it's not a common field andunqiue gifts are hard to find. I am wondering if she would appreciate a onesie that reads "My Mommy Taught Me my ABGs." Or, if anyone else has any cute or clever ideas?
  18. I'm a new NP in an office with 2 other physicians, 4 MAs, 3 receptionists and the office manager. What is appropriate for gifts during the holidays? Should I give gifts to the 2 MAs who work with me? To the other physicians? To everyone in the office? I would love some input. Thanks!!
  19. I'm about to start my first job as a NP and I feel a little nervous. I was wondering how you handle situations with patients where you don't know something or have to look it up? I'm not sure that I want to do it in front of the patient because I don't want them to lack confidence in me, but I am curious what others do or say to leave the room to research what they don't know? As a new NP, I know there are things I will have to look up and was wondering the best way to handle those situations.
  20. What initials do you include on your lab coat? My official initials are DNP, APRN, FNP- C. Should I include all of those? Some of those?
  21. When I worked prn (ft hours) as a RN I didn't mind not having PTO because I had 4 days off and could schedule around vacations etc. But working Monday through Friday as a NP.. yeah I want some vacation!

  23. Wow, the more I read the more I am starting to think that my offer really isn't a great deal. We don't live near family, so we would have to travel for any holiday. I would barely have enough time to visit for one holiday and go on vacation, and nothing else, with 10 days PTO. I am surprised that this company "cannot" budge on PTO days. I would think that would be easier than increasing salary etc but I could be wrong.
  24. Hi all, I was wondering if anyone has utilized a staffing firm or recruiting agency such as CompHealth? How was your experience? Good or bad? I am looking for a permanent position, not locum tenens.
  25. Full Glass, was this your only offer when you started? I am curious if your other offers were similar or if they varied widely depending on the position. I live about an hour west of Santa Barbara and am not very flattered with the offer I received and they don't seem eager to negotiate. It would be 40 hours/primary care, $115,000, 10 days PTO, 7 sick days and 3 CME. I am a new grad but with a DNP. I am curious on your thoughts about CA's central coast!
