New NP - Michigan Controlled Substance License App
Pretty specific question, hopefully someone can help me out. New NP, just about to start my first job. Incredibly excited! I'm attempting to apply for my DEA number and need a state controlled substance license to go with it. Being in Michigan, the LARA website led me to this application... https://www.michigan.gov/documents/lara/lara_pharm_cs_app_0314_450189_7.pdf however, there is no nurse practitioner option in the drop down list. There is a PA option, is that what I'm supposed to pick? Is there another application entirely? Hope someone can help me out. Thanks!

Is it pointless to be an A student in nursing school?
Honestly, no. I received my BSN through an above average ranked accelerated nursing program in Michigan, passed my NCLEX on the first try, and am currently in grad school and didn't get a 4.0. I didn't try for a 4.0. I had a social life. I hung out with my non-school friends, worked out - not as much as I'd like but I was still pretty active in the gym, had time for my girlfriend, and had time to socialize with my school friends. Grades are great and incredibly important when it comes to graduate school but you're only young once. I didn't want to miss out on those things. I was lucky enough to do well in school either way (3.61) but there has to be a balance. Having a base of knowledge you learned in school is nice but I don't think it is that helpful when it comes to the job. I worked in a level 1 trauma/surgical ICU, the OR, med/surg, and a CVICU and I think the majority of learning comes from experience on the job. I think an overwhelming amount of my colleagues would agree. A lot of people referred to graduate school with the grades and I agree, better grades will increase your chances at getting in. I was fortunate enough to get into my #1 choice while sleeping through my first interview. Granted, I think my resume was quite strong but this is just my view/experience. My two cents. I hope it helps.

I called in sick within my 90 day probation period
You should be ok! You might want to get a doctor's note depending on your floor/hospital but I know my jobs have never required one. I'm sure they management team would much rather you stay at home and get better than risk infecting patients/staff and making the wrong decision because you're not 100%.

New nurse, just want to walk out
It sounds like you were dealt a bad hand. With my first job, I was given 3-4 months of orientation. What type of floor is it? If you don't feel comfortable (sounds like you don't), I'd highly suggest talking to your manager or ANM about being put back with a preceptor. I know in the SICU I just left, we would alter orientation schedules all the time for those that felt they needed more time.

Should I leave this racist town?
I didn't get a chance to read all the responses but I know where you're coming from. I visited Tennessee to check out a school and the area. Being from the mid-west, I wasn't sure what to expect. I really enjoyed the school but I did experience more than an expected amount of racism while I was in the surrounding area. Major turn off and I ended up not applying to the school. Like one of the commentors said, leaving can make it hard to find a job but you'll eventually find one. And I'd take difficulty finding a job over a) racism b) safety c) happiness at work. Good luck

Studying pharm
Getting back into studying was a little hard for me. I just started an NP program after being out of school for about five years. I tried to do all the reading but I found that to be a bit tedious and I didn't absorb the information all that well. Have you tried Quizlet? I've found Quizlet to help me a lot. I take the powerpoints from class, recorded lecture, expanded on those topics from the book and kind of transcribed those over to Quizlet in question form. With Quizlet you can play games with your material and have virtual flashcards that make studying a lot easier. Have you also tried studying with friends from class?

University of Miami FNP 2016
To the people currently in the program... does anybody need/want someone to exchange notes or study with? I just moved to the area and don't know anybody. It could make both of our lives easier! Thanks

medicrn25 - I'm currently in the FNP program and the interview isn't super indepth. The one clinical question I can remember asked if I was working in the ER as an NP and a patient came in complaining of generalized abdominal pain, what would be my thought process? Other than that it was general questions... why did I pick that school, weaknesses/strengths, where do I see myself in x amount of years.

I accessed it. Marta Medina sent us an email on October 16 with Blackboard instructions. I used that to get into all the APP stuff

Quinnk27, I got my Florida license today. I think it took less than 10 days total

I plan on working per diem or part time. As for living situation, I'm not quite sure yet. I've been looking quite a bit but not positive where I want to live. UMiami has a roommate finder website but there aren't too many options at the moment.

http://www.mailandmore.com/Digital-Fingerprinting sorry, thought I hit post earlier. I think I'm just gonna suck it up and fly down to get the prints. It's worth it to not have to deal with the stress in waiting. I know some people that live down there so it will make it a little easier

I used this site... Digital Fingerprinting | Orlando FL | Mail & More and I completely understand, it feels a little rushed. I think I'm just gonna suck it up and fly down there for the printing. I have a friend that lives down in Tampa that I can stay with.

Yep. Just got them done today. I was lucky and my local police department had the FD-258 fingerprint cards in stock. Not sure if you noticed or if yours is the same but my admission letter said that it was required to have your Florida nursing license by Oct 23rd. I called UMiami today and spoke with them about the fingerprinting issues, the prep course, and dates. Said the same finger printing cant be used for the license and fingerprinting and encouraged me to get the background prints done in Florida. I found a place online that seems to make the license fingerprinting relatively easy/gives a step by step process. It's relatively expensive ($125), though. Hope this helps

Quinnk27... question for you, you're from out of state. When doing the background check, did you still select the, "if you currently live in Florida - electronic FBI fingerprint information" option as they recommend?

I found out that I had been accepted pretty quickly. Less than a week. I think my nursing degree GPA is 3.6, my previous degree is somewhere around a 3.4. I have about 3 years combined in the trauma/SICU and CVICU. Also, moving from out of state and wouldn't mind tips on places to live or roommates. Thanks! Bootcamp starts Oct 26
