  1. Hey Megan1977 I would just be honest about the situation to potential employers because the probation will show up attached to your license. I applied to several jobs and had interviews one of the questions they asked was why I had disciplinary action on my license I was honest about my past mistakes, and eventually was hired. I'm not familiar with RN volunteers who're on probation but best of luck.
  2. Depends on a few a factors. It takes about 2 days or so for them to cash the money order and register you in the system so you can check your application status. But the whole timeline is really up in the air as far as how long they take. They do tend to take a while. I think you can check their website to see what applications they are currently processing (i.e. applications from May). Hope this helps.
  3. Yes, it's in Sacramento.
  4. It's a letter of explanation so just explain what happened and why you got arrested.
  5. For states like CA even if someones records are expunged or old the BON or other entities will request fingerprints from the DOJ who gets their information from the FBI database. The FBI then sends a cumulative "rap sheet" from any states or federal agencies. All this information can be found on the oag(office of the attorney general) website. I don't agree with you assuming because the poster called their arrest record a "rap sheet" that they're a career criminal. If you do a simple search on the oag website they refer to arrest records as rap sheet. "If the applicant's fingerprints match fingerprints in the national criminal history database, the FBI sends the DOJ a cumulative RAP sheet that contains criminal history information from any states or federal agencies that have reported the information to the FBI." I copy and pasted this from the website.
  6. I think there's an old post about it somewhere on here. I can't remember exactly but do a quick search, it should come up.
  7. I wanted to let fellow nurses know that it is possible to get a letter of public reprimand with prior convictions from the CA BRN. My story is a little different from the recent posts I've seen so I'll provide a brief summary. I have a few convictions from over 10 years ago, which were prior to me obtaining my nursing license. One factor that I think helped me was that I am an experienced nurse (years of experience prior to obtaining a CA license). I fully disclosed the convictions, provided everything the board asked of me, and although it was a long process I finally got a license without probation just a public reprimand. Don't lose hope, keep trying and provide what they ask of you and most importantly be honest about your situations. Feel free to PM or ask questions if needed.
  8. I did edit my letter however I was still denied. I haven't received the stipulations letter from the AG as of yet. There was a post I was following a while back and the poster would send a copy of his letter to anyone who asked but he hasn't been on in a while. When I get the terms I will then decide if I want to appeal or just have the stipulations. AG is really slow. If you happen to get someone at the board they can look in your file and tell you who has your file at AG and provide you a phone number so you can check on the status. CA is ridiculous, I have applied to other states in the meantime and have received unrestricted licenses. If you have any other questions feel free to PM me.
  9. I haven't been in this situation before but I would suggest for you to do a fbi background check on yourself to see if it shows up.
  10. There was a previous thread where the answer to your question was answered. I believe it was at least 4 months if not longer. If I happen to stumble upon the thread I will post the link. But maybe you can search through the past few threads as well.
  11. Thank you so much for the information. I guess I should start saving my money this process is expense. Please keep me updated on your status. Fingers crossed for you.
  12. @leslieca the statement of issues is from the AG? Also how did you find an attorney? Are they charging a lot? I am in the process of writing my appeal letter and what to be prepared for what comes after.
  13. I agree with everything @RN_Man, BSN, RN said. I've been reading through a lot of CA forums and CA is very tough on anyone with criminal history. I can say that other states are not as strict. I've gotten licensed by two other states where all I had to do was provide a letter of explanation and was granted a license. Initially after I passed my boards they didn't grant me a license until they reviewed my letter which took them about 3 months. I live on the east coast btw. So don't give up hope. As far as employers I would say look outside your local area. My first job I had to drive 30 miles with toll. But I got some good experience and from there other opportunities opened up. Stay positive and don't lose hope.
  14. Yes I plan on rewriting my letter of explanation. I've been a nurse for about 7 years now. And never had a problem with the letter of explanation that I give. CA is just an obstacle course right now, smh. Thanks for the advice I will rewrite my letter and include the things you've suggested. Never thought about looking into an attorney but it just might be worth it. I will check into that. Thanks for the advice and information.
  15. Hi Ned, Yes the probationary period comes up with a license check and from what I've heard it stays online for up to 10 years. I've been licensed in two other states will full disclosure of convictions and have been given licenses with no stipulation. CA is just really tough on individuals with a record. I will contact the agencies I have been in touch with and find out how traveling with a stipulation works. When I say denied I mean the CA BON denied my application and stated I can appeal. By appealing I have two options agreeing to a stipulation or waiting again one year to have my application looked at again. So what I've read is that they usually deny most anyone with a conviction and some prefer to work outside of CA due to the many restrictions that come with agreeing to a stipulation. So basically they will eventually give me a license as long as I agree to their terms of "their probation." Their probation also discloses all court documents online as an attachment to the actual license from what I've read.
  16. Hey nicki14. I'm in a similar boat. Got my denial letter and would like to appeal. How did your whole process go? Was it hard finding a job? Any tips for the appeal process?
  17. Hi 3rdeyeRN, I know you haven't been on for a while but did you ever find a job? If so how did that process go? Also what were your exact stipulations if you don't mind me asking.
  18. Hey everyone, I am looking to start traveling in the near future. However I got denied by CA BON for things on my criminal record from before I became a nurse. My question to you all is have you heard of travel companies placing a person who has their license on probation? I know CA usually gives a stipulation of three years probation. Any help is appreciated.
  19. @sreneesa Yes I disclosed convictions not on DOJ or FBI. I never got around to expunging my record so on my state website these convictions can be seen. I would do the DOJ if I were you. I recently submitted mine after my denial letter because I want to see what's on there. The application is 1 page and relatively simple, and there is a fee of $18, plus you can get your fingerprints from the local police department. I wish we could get more input from someone with more experience but I'm just going based off what I've read in these forums. Hope some of this helps
  20. I just received my denial letter in the mail. One thing I noticed is that they sent me a page from my livescan which only had two of my prior convictions and not the five that I have. I was researching tonight and just found a post that said to do your own livescan first before disclosing any convictions because not all crimes are federal. Boy do I wish I would've seen that post before I disclosed all my convictions. Now I am kind of stuck. I know I want to appeal and do the stipulation but should I try to expunge my record first? Or just go through with the stipulation and see what happens? Now that the BON has convictions that the FBI didn't have on my report what will happen? Will they add those crimes to my file or discard them as the DOJ didn't disclose those?

  22. This is a good post as I am in a similar situation. I am an OR nurse at a level 1 trauma center that will be relocating and looking at UCI and others in the area. I have heard good things about UCI and hope you enjoy working there. Please fill me in on any updates and info on how things are going there. Any info would be great. Thanks everyone
  23. caleb2015- I am not going to state which HHC I work for, but I will say this I had a meeting with HHC EEO and all things I stated to you were confirmed. You can believe what you want. I know the truth, and so does EEO and all agencies involved. I don't have time to be questioned on things I witnessed or things that were said in a meeting or things that have been investigated and things that are being pursued legally. That is all. I will not be responding to any more of your accusations.
  24. caleb2015 There is no pain on my end. I just feel bad for people who went to school here and still can't find a job. I am not blaming anyone for any frustrations. I am speaking on what I see and know. What do student loans have to do with anything? I don't throw stones, I state what I observe and what is being done at my facility. And to answer your question HR Directors for whatever reason do wait for these nurses to come over. Just had a new nurse join our unit who is from the Philippines join the facility as a staff nurse after waiting a few years to come.
  25. estrellaCR I am speaking on what I see. Yes they are still recruiting nurses from the Philippines, I have no reason to lie. I know a few new nurses who just came from the Philippines and this is their first US job. I am speaking about new nurses attending orientations and then going to their respective units. As you know all HHC's differ and I'm speaking on what I know and see. (I.E that's why I stated at the end of my post "just being honest with what I see."
