  1. "I got fired for **insert reason that would be a good "last straw" reason to get fired, but not worthy of being fired on first offense**. Please tell me what I did was right and my hospital was wrong! I swear I've never had any other disciplinary actions" ..."except that one time. And that other time. and the time I got in a screaming fight with my boss...."
  2. I work in a unit where the culture is that everyone takes their breaks unless patients are literally coding all day. We are 2:1, which sometimes helps, but when you have two critical patients, and so do each of your team mates it can be scary to leave some times. But 98% of the time, we all take a 1 hour break (30 min paid and 30 min unpaid). Its so important. Interestingly, the culture on night shift is somewhat different and they often don't get their breaks. Morale is lower and their staffing suffers as a result.
  3. Wow! That sounds like a rough situation! However, if everything you say is true, then it sounds like you're off to a great start. You sound like a very competent nurse who is a good patient advocate. Unfortunately, if you can handle it, it may be best to try to get in at least 6-8 months. At that point, it is probably safe to start applying/interviewing for other jobs. I don't have much in the way of advice but just keep it up! Work your 36 hrs, and try to find really great things to do on your days off to keep you sane!
  4. I had a very delirious pt once who had a rectal tube in. I come in and he's playing with the tube (luckily he hadn't managed to remove it yet). I said "Bob! (Made up name. I don't even remember this guy's name) Don't touch that!! What are you doing?" He says, "I just need a spoon to eat my ice cream." I started laughing, and said, "Bob, that's not ice cream. That's a tube full of your poop!" He responds simply with "Well, ya got me!" Also, had a patient self-extubate once. I ran in and said "Why did you do that?" She responds with "It just wasn't necessary." I guess that would be the case.... she flew. Guess she was right!
