I think BID is the better option. It would be great to be guaranteed a full time spot right off the bat, instead of being per diem. As a new grad, it is important to get a good amount of experience. With the BWH position, you may not get too many shifts as you would with BID because you wouldn't be guaranteed a full time spot right away. Also, I think starting on a medical floor is a great place to get the basics down, instead of floating to all different units. It may be easier to transition to being a nurse if you have consistency, like working on the same unit every day. There have been some issues recently with nurses at the Brigham going on strike. Both hospitals are great overall and I have heard excellent things about them. The choice is yours :) you will be very lucky with either position!

I feel like I wrote this! I thought I had landed my dream job on a surgical trauma floor a few months after graduating. I quickly realized that it wasn't for me and floor nursing was probably not my thing. I had a 9 week orientation and decided not to continue at the end of it. I was so worried I would never find a job and no one would want me because i quit. I found a job in a locked psych hospital and worked there for 10 months even though it was scary and dangerous. About a month ago, I accepted a job in a primary care office and I really love it! I think this is the type of nursing for me. I still do "nurse things" but my stress level has decreased a lot and I finally feel like I can take a breath. Look into office jobs or even a flu clinic since it is flu season and there are tons around! good luck :) you aren't alone with feeling overwhelmed!! I understand what you mean by not a normal new grad nervousness, I had it too.

hello, I live in Boston so I'm close to you. I graduated in 2015 with my BSN and agree it is hard to find a job with no nursing experience.your PCA experience is great though. I applied to probably 200 job postings online because I was looking in and around the city. What type of nursing are you interested in? Check the Beth Israel website, the positions listed as "clinical nurse 1" are for people with 0-11 months RN experience so that could work if you want med-surg. Good luck! :)

I feel like I wrote this myself! I was in a similar position as you last year. I worked on a surgical trauma unit in a level 1 trauma center from Sept 2015-Nov 2015. This was my first job as a new grad and I was completely in over my head. I had a great support system from the staff but mentally I couldn't handle the stress. It got to the point where I could hardly sleep and my hair started falling out. I had so much anxiety and could not focus on my work. I didn't write this to make it about me, but to let you know that you are not alone. I ended up quitting and now work in psych. I know I don't want to work in psych forever but the stress level is highly reduced now. I am also looking for an outpatient job. I know you will make the right decision in whatever you choose. hello! I graduated with my BSN last May and work at an inpatient psych hospital. All the units are locked and we have some very violent and aggressive patients at times. We have no security which is what makes our turnover rate very high. However, I really do like what I do and am looking for a new job at a safer psych facility. We do not screen our patients before they are admitted, and therefore are not really sure what the patient is truly like until they arrive. I think psych is a good place to start if you are not interested in med-surg since it gives you a good foundation of learning how to build patient relationships. If you interview for psych, make sure you ask about emergency policies, staff ratio, turnover rate, etc. good luck :)

hello! First, congrats on landing a nursing job! Second, I feel like I wrote this myself. I also graduated in May and started work on a trauma floor with ortho at a level 1 trauma center. I also woke up during the night with anxiety and was constantly worried about things I forgot to do or could have done wrong. It got to the point where my hair started falling out and still is. I decided to quit after 2 months because I could not handle it, especially being my first RN job. I started a job in psych this week on a women's unit and like the pace a lot more. The staff is supportive and helpful and want everyone to succeed. My advice would be to try to work out some problems with management and the way you are treated. Just know that you are not alone in feeling this way. Sometimes the stress and anxiety get so hard to deal with that the job just isn't worth it. I hope this helps and good luck to you! :)

first, congrats on graduating! I graduated this past May with my BSN from a school in Boston. My classmates also started applying around this time last year. Many hospitals do start posting their residency programs pretty early so I would keep your eye out for those specific positions. As the poster above said, don't wait too long because they do fill up. As for regular RN jobs (not new grad), I would probably wait until you pass the NCLEX. good luck!! This semester will fly by.

Hi, I was trying to reply to your private message but I can't for some reason. At BI, the orientation starts when you get the position, not at certain times of the year. It is 12 weeks long and they told me the first 8 is with a preceptor, the last 4 is more on your own but you still have another nurse with you! about your post above: I just graduated in May from nursing school and Boston and a lot of people in my class were CNAs at BI and MGH during school. I wish I worked as a CNA during school but I didn't. I've heard good things from the people who worked at both of those hospitals. good luck!! :)

I hope you like HURST! My class found it very helpful! You should be all set with your ATT (I think it was because so many people graduate in May and they got backed up). I hope you have a great semester :)

No way, I went to the Boston campus! Not many people have taken the NCLEX from my class since Pearson Vue is like 5 weeks behind on sending out ATTs. We took the HURST during our last semester and it was great. I'm assuming you will too since the dean is the same for all campuses :)
