  1. Generally very high. Just remember that if you are an alternate and you don’t get in, you’re guaranteed a spot for the next class. The Dean mentioned today that they haven’t had any declinations, but keep you’re hopes up. For my cohort, they went through the entire 10 alternates and had to redraw names. I’m not sure about the class behind us. Remember that some students get into other schools too and sometimes decline the others. Best of luck to you.
  2. Working is HIGHLY discouraged, but totally doable... depending on how well you are dedicated and know how to time manage. We we have several students who work and they do perfectly fine. It’s just a lot of dedication. I personally work one 8 hour shift a week on a Saturday, but I didn’t start that until 3rd semester when I finally knew how the program worked and I was comfortable with it. So much went on first and second, it was just difficult to manage. The workload the first year is definitely insane. Very heavy in terms on content.
  3. Congratulations to those who got accepted! You will love Sierra. I graduate this May. They prepare you very well for life after the program.
  4. Hi everyone! For those who got accepted to Sierra and were at Orientation on Tuesday. I am one of the people in charge of our mentor program and we have created a Facebook group in order for those to join and ask questions regarding class/clinical. We are currently still trying to pair students up, but this group will help out in the meantime, and also be there to ask questions if your mentor doesn't know. We are here for your support, and we all want you to succeed. The name of the group is "Current Sierra College Nursing Students." You do not have to join if you don't want to.
  5. Sierra does not have an LVN program.
  6. Same with Sierra. Med sheets are required for all care plans. Meds are definitely overwhelming first semester, but it begins to come together around second.
  7. It could be useful. I didn't take it. Again, schools are different so they may incorporate it differently. When we had Skills lab, they took an hour of time each week and we had a Math Professor come in and teach. First semester is all about pill dosages, how many mg/ml/dose, and injections. If math isn't really your strong point, you could take it.
  8. I took pharm at SCC before starting my first semester at Sierra last fall. I honestly don't recommend it. There are so many classifications of meds in 6 weeks, and I personally didn't retain any of the info. I don't know how other schools incorporate pharm, but normally it's incorporated with disease processes and actual nursing care. Plus when you're in clinical, you'll learn more and majority of the time give the same meds every time.
  9. Congrats to everyone who got in. Us current second semester students look forward to meeting everyone at orientation.
  10. The family member is there because the school of nursing wants to make sure you have a "support system." Nursing School is hard, and they want to talk to the family briefly about the support system, simply put, that you WILL need throughout the two years. I'm sure your boyfriend will be fine to bring. As for the merger, I am in it. There are 15 spots, and it's all random selection. They'll talk to you more about it toward the end of first semester, and you'll find out if you get in during winter break.
  11. At The first orientation, they don't really go into too much detail. But at the second or third orientation, they will have us (current second semester students-- will be third) be there to talk. So bring all your questions as we can answer them.
  12. Congrats! That sure was early. I'm currently in my second semester at sierra, so if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
  13. Sierra is the only local one I'm aware of that you don't need to apply to the school before applying to the nursing program... unless it changed this application period as they changed their application process. Just be aware that ARC's and SCC's (and I think Butte) application period has ended for this semester already.
  14. Honestly, I want to say you won't need it, but it depends on how much you remember from A&P and Micro. When they go over a lecture about a body system (let's say GI), they sometimes do a small brief overview of the system, and then go straight in the disease and pathophysiology. When they do that, at least for me, everything just clicks because I've been exposed to it before. And I want to say that it will 100% click for you too. Some things may need a little longer studying, but since you've been exposed to it before it'll be a little bit easier. When we had orientation back in May 2017, a bunch of students wanted to know how much we should go back and study pre-few courses before actually starting first semester, and the instructors actually advised againsed it. As for medical terminology, I guess you could take a medical terminally class. That's what I did, but that was back in 2015 (2 years before starting last fall). And let me tell you that I honestly don't remember majority of it!! You will learn these things as you progress through the semesters. That's why most ADN/BSN programs don't require medical terminology as a pre-req (I've only seen LVN programs require that).
  15. Those 6 units in the summer are upper division (human development and cultural anthropology). They aren't the lower division you take at the community college level. If you have already taken them, you don't need to retake them. Those are just the residency ones. Starting 4th semester is when you take the actual nursing classes. The 3 schools are different in regards to who gets in. For Sierra, it was random draw but you have to maintain a B throughout the entire program. However, not all 40 people want to do it.
  16. I'm in the merger at Sierra. They basically take 15 from each school (Sierra, ARC, and SCC) and make one giant cohort. It starts in between the second and third semester. In that summer, you take 6 units at Sac State to gain residency, and then you don't do anything during third semester except the regular ADN program. Then come 4th semester, it's the ADN program on top of 3 units with Sac State. Then you go onto summer and graduate fall with your BSN. The only time you are at Sac State is for those 6 unit residency courses in the summer, and the rest are actually at the local community colleges through Sac State.
  17. Apply for the LVN. I did it as a backup as well (last year). I applied to both SCC LVN and RN program, and got denied for the RN but accepted to the LVN. I was also denied by ARC and Butte (RN) and I was waiting on Sierra to respond. Well I found out I got accepted to the LVN program, turned in my acceptance, and then a week later I got into Sierra. It honestly doesn't hurt to do it.
  18. Best of luck to all of you applying! I'm currently in my second semester at Sierra. If anyone has any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. I know a bunch will ask (as we all asked in the Fall 2017 thread) how many times it took applying; it was my first time at Sierra, and twice at the other local schools. A majority of us got in on our first time, but for some it took up to 3 rounds of applications.
  19. Hi everyone! So we just had our first orientation last night, and I wanted to let everyone know who has been wondering about one thing... There was 297 people who applied for Fall 2017 (which seems very low in my opinion. As everyone turned in their applications, each packet was given a number. Then they took the numbers 1-297 to the math department and did some kind of algorithm into the computer and it generated 50 numbers (40 for enrollment and 10 for alternates). Then used those numbers to look at who had what packet and then proceed to review it. If I remember correctly, they said they went through all the alternates and had to redraw like 10 more names because a lot of students declined their acceptances. Also, they said they will be changing the application process next year to be multi-criteria.
  20. Thank you! And same to you. I'm glad to get A&P and Micro over with lol. Now it's time to step it up and start nursing school... and possibly die a billion times over the next two years lol. And no, I won't be going to the ceremony. I know it's a big deal, but the degrees I got were kind of like "secondaries." Almost like something I received along the line. I will however walk when I graduate nursing school :)
  21. Oh wow! You received an alternate spot even after you received your rejection? That's very odd, but so cool. I have two friends that got in to SCC. I'm hoping you get in :) best of luck to you! We have our first orientation on the 23rd. Supper exited. And ARC was my first choice because I've been there since Spring 13'. I graduated Last summer though (2016), but it'll be nice to kind of get away from there. Sac City was my second choice, but a little farther. But I'm super exited to get into Sierra because it's closer than the other colleges, and they have amazing NCLEX pass rates. I read that Sierra was ranked 6th in nursing programs in Cali, while SCC was like 10 or something like that.
  22. I have applied to the 3 colleges you mentioned, and was denied for SCC and ARC (ARC was my first choice because that's where I completed my pre-reqs. I got into the LVN Program though at SSC and would've started Spring 2018... However, I got accepted to Sierra for Fall 2017. Is there any word on your applications? You should've heard back from them by now. Best of luck :)
  23. Hello, I hope I am posting this in the right spot. I have finally been accepted to a Nursing Program (Sierra College in Rocklin, CA) for the Fall 2017 semester coming up. I was wondering if I should take a summer class of Pharmacology (I would take it at Sac City) before I start because I hear that it is recommended to take it as it can be very tough when you first come across it in the program (if it is even in the program). is there anyone here who is a current Sierra Student, or a graduate of Sierra College who can possible give me some advice for this... or even anyone with advice? should I even worry about taking a summer Pharmacology class and just take it when I'm in the program when the time comes? I just want to be prepared best I can. thanks, Todd
  24. i thought the same thing. However, it may take just as long to get into an RN program (Without LVN or whatever). You could always still apply to RN programs while in the LVN program. That's what I was planning to do if I didn't get into an RN program. You also need to count in the 6 months of work experience before you can apply.
  25. Yeah, I turned down my acceptance for the LVN program starting spring 2018. So exited I got into Sierra. And yes, apply to RN programs for Fall cause you may get in to a program starting Spring 18, and you might not even need to do the LVN program
