  1. British Columbia Nurses may have Gov. imposed contract

Hi, I am an American RN living/working (by Interim Permit) in BC (my husband is Canadian). I am scheduled to write my Canadian Exam on Aug 8th. I am still on probation in BC since I only began working three weeks ago. What an awkward situation. I...

  4. Canadian Nurses

Unfortunately, if it can happen here in B.C. Canada (and, in Nova Scotia, Canada), it can happen in the States as well. This is a case of the government negating the right of a union to negotiate for their members. Anyone remember the Air Traffic C...

  6. Which Shoes Are Best?

Thought I would die of aching feet on those 12 hour shifts until I found New Balance. They are awesome!

  8. Preception

I'm wondering from your preceptor/preceptee points of view, what is appropriate during this period? does preception involve having your own patients by your fifth shift? how many of your own patients should you have? how do you contend with each pre...

  10. "Send my girl down here now"...(Please.....)

When faced with situations like this, I always smile and tell the patient that 'moving those limbs' (ROM), is an important part of their care, then leave the room. It isn't rude, and, they always get the point.
  11. Leno's show

Attention author of: I'm sorry in advance Would you consider emailing your poem to the Leno Show? It does much more than protest his rude comments, rather it gives a picture of how things really are.
  12. Advice or whatever....

Hi Fulwood, I worked as a secretary for years before deciding to try nursing. I worked as a CNA for four years (major cut in pay-incredibly hard work). Finally, at 37, I went back to school. Now, I am a nurse. It may be different for everyone...I...
  13. where to school?

I am not familiar with the schools here, cause I'm an American and went to school in the States. I do know that although BC is lovely, Alberta seems to be taking better care of their nurses. I would research it thoroughly. BC has LOTS of taxes, Al...
  14. British Columbia

It's a bit off the topic, but, pertinent to BC. I just watched a segment on BCTV. It concerned the nurse job action going on here. The job action is a simple no overtime for a specified number of days. The entire story consisted of a story about ...
  15. British Columbia

Start wage for RN in BC is 21.40 with a top wage of 26.00 (DOE). I hear it's 32.00 in Alberta. That's all CAD by the way.
  16. Refresher Course

Hi Amanda, What is a refresher nursing course? Where is it offered, how long does it take?
  17. Please take a look at how preceptorship is handled in your facility. If you have an opportunity to help write policy, please consider letting your preceptors be volunteers who are well compensated for their efforts (I think time and a half would be ...
  18. What Freaks You Out?

Hmmm....looks like I have lots to look forward to. funniest: in nursing school one of the students assisting a resident to the BR yelled 'look out she's gonna blow!', the student came out with feces from head to toe, it was even dripping from the ce...

  22. Preparing for Nursing School

The A & P Coloring Book is a great idea. For A & P, I found "The Laboratory Atlas of Anatomy and Physiology" by Douglas J. Eder, Shari Lewis Kaminsky, and John W. Betram, very helpful. There is a book called "Nursing Made Insanely Easy" 2nd E...

  24. If an MD shoved you...

I was just thinking...usually when someone is aggressive, they do it without an audience. Many hospitals have security cameras. Perhaps there is proof on tape. And, so far as what I would do? I would treat it exactly like a stranger assault on th...
