  1. nurses here barely make enough to scrap by. Do not move here to do nursing, but worth it.
  2. I think the job market actually can, but not the acute care job market. If you aren't looking for acute care, plenty of jobs.
  3. Only 2 hospitals, maybe 3, are doing new grads. Of those 3, 2 of them hire less than 10 new grads per 6 month cycle. With 3 nursing schools just on Oahu, it is competitive.
  4. Kapiolani is the ONLY NICU open to the public here on Oahu. Tripler has a NICU but its military only. As far as Hawaii being open to other cultures, people here are to some degree. I think it's more about you needing to be open. Don't expect to come here and everyone to adapt to you and your ways, you won't be liked at all. Come here with an open mind, be respectful, and don't be rude/impatient. Local people here do have some negative feelings towards mainlanders as people from the mainland haven't always treated Hawaii with respect.
  5. Don't recommend it at all. Tons of new grads haven't found jobs in acute care and are working as Aids/clerks just to have the opportunity to be considered for the position (noticed I said considered!!!) most new grads leave island to go to the mainland to get a job.
  6. Hmm if you are looking for clinical floor jobs at the hospitals, I don't think the MSN is going to do that much for you. My experience has been that nurses with higher education levels are treated no different than ADNs here. Really only comes into play for the administrator side of things if that's your goal. i think $45+/hr to $52 is the right expectation. I do know that Queens helps with relocation.
  7. Just go volunteer. Island is small and people aren't going to blast the place.
  8. Stop thinking about it. Seriously. You are over thinking every little thing and it isn't necessary. 'Analysis Paralysis'. What you need is: 1) Sleep 2) good diet 3) exercise maniac highs and depressive lows are normal in the cycle of living for humans even if we don't tend to classify it like this. In fact, we cyclically get manic and grandiose, and then crash and burn back to reality (follow the stock market?). Things will get better. Every new grad feels the way you do and they all over come and find there niche. YOU NEED THIS MED SURG experience! i know this is harder to do then type, but I've been in your shoes, didn't want the med route, and worked through it.
  9. Both places pay low $50s for 2yrs+ experienced RNs. As for all the other stuff you listed like MSN and what not no clue. I've never had the impression that MSN gets paid more if you are doing acute care floor nursing. Most of the MSNs I know have gone on into admin or crna
  10. Not accepted . Seems like you need a 3.6+ gpa/79+teas/healthcare xp/coreqs completed just to be competitive. Applying to Manoa also next cycle.
  11. Yea at this point I have pretty much accepted the fact I didn't get in. I'm going to retake my TEAs and 2 classes over the summer to increase my chances for spring. Who knows if the letter actually comes in and says otherwise.
  12. Called up KCC office and was told they mailed all letters out last Thursday and I should have received mine already. Crazy. Asked them to verify if my application was received and they took down my info and hung up. I wonder if they even got my application! I turned it into the kekaulike office the first day applications were being accepted.
  13. Wow no letter yet. Wonder what's going on.
  14. Well I'll be checking my mail tomorrow right at 11. Not feeling very hopeful after all these people posting with better stats than me.
  15. Yeah I'm pretty shocked that curlie didn't get in. I mean ALL A's and only ONE B and healthcare experience? I mean did everyone score in the 80s and 90s for the teas test? I would have thought that they would have gotten in. Competition must be really strong this application cycle. I wonder if they calculate the GPA in a weighted format? Time for me to prepare to retake classes.
